Unwrapped the Samsung BD-P1400 Blu-ray player and connected it up to a seven year old Yamaha HTIB receiver via digital electrical and Vizio 42" LCD flat-panel monitor. We watched Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer without a hitch. Then we popped in The 5th Element and started getting popping noises on the audio and quickly noticed the audio was out of sync (2-3 seconds) with the video.
Ok, being the analytical type of a household we quickly determined the passable culprit: disk, player, AVR, or a combination therein. First experiment was to walk the disk upstairs and put it into the PS3 and test it through the Pioneer Elite AVR. No problem. We then took it back downstairs and got the same problem again. We then walked the disk and BD-P1400 upstairs and connected the player to the Pioneer Elite via digital optical and got further into the movie, but the problem came up again.
We are now watching the movie (about 1/3-1/2 way through) and not a single audio anomaly. Since we tested the BD-P1400 using both electrical and optical digital outputs and ran them through two difference AVRs and still had the problem we ruled out the AVRs. Because the disk plays without error in the PS3, we somewhat ruled out the disk--leaving just the player.
Ok, to be fair its time to upgrade the firmware. Worse case scenario would be to return it to Costco and just get another PS3.

i had a similar audio problem that took ages to debug. turned out in the end to be a twitchy coax digital cable that would work MOST of the time and then it would cause lost clock signal on the processor. CLICK. and then regain it. CLICK. and towards the end it would oscilate CLICKCLICKCLICKCLICKCLICK.
annoying. i replaced much gear until i found that the cable was bad at the processor end RCA connector. sigh.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!

But this is happening on both the RCA-style (phono) electrical connector and also the S/PDIF (Toslink) style optical. Now I am trying to wrap my head around the firmware, as listed on their website, vs the 'software' shown on the player. Installed software is 70913.02-Xaa, but this corresponds to 1.x?? Let me go get the 1.2 on their website and try it. Worse case is I take it back--no biggy.
Update: Updated the firmware and watched the movie [again]. It now plays without sync problems. Will be playing this thing all week for a sense of confidence. I got some movies to watch.
