Another thread got me thinking about what will happen to the meaning, status, definition... of a HT with digitals proliferating like rabbits.
I have two friends who have gone the digital route. One has a light cannon that shots a 25' wide LCD image, quality is not high on his list, it's more of a party HT. The other guy is into outdoors so his set up is made to be portable, painted drop cloth... Image quality is also not high on his list either, but he loves how his 2,500 lumen PJ is too bright to watch.
From what I have seen, it's all about size. Just put up a large projected image and the masses are happy. Some people are using HT to just attract a crowd, it's just something to gather around while they party. In fact my first buddy with the light cannon will get a much better response when he just uses his cannon as a color organ going to the music.

THe current HT standard is defined as a theater in a box, connected to an Insignia (BB crap house brand) 36" LCD TV.
That's stylin', and can be had complete for just under $1000.*
*$300 Monster cables not included.

I have a DLP for out door movies. That is a good use for a digital. But I do not classify any outdoor theater as a Home Theater.

I shouldn't be talking, with my JcPenny offbrand amplifier and Insignia speakers, but damn that was funny....
PS - the insignias are damn good for their price, though.
