Anyone vote in Amazon's 6 rounds of big deals? I did - not a winner yet. Round 4 features the Samsung BP1400 Blu-Ray player at $149, the Toshiba HD-A35 at $149 and the TIVO HD DVR at $89. Since Blu-Ray has such a great lead in software sales I would expect that the Blu-Ray player would lead the HD-DVD in voting. But no, the Toshiba HD-A35 got substationally more votes, 41% vs. 23% (and 36% for the TIVO). Since it's likely that hundreds of thousands and possibly millions of people voted, I find the result very interesting. Maybe there's more support for HD-DVD than it appears from software sales.

The BDP1400 was $249, not $149, but yes, it's interesting that HD-DVD out-polled the BD by so much -- coincidentally by almost precisely 16 to 9. Smile

The The BDP1400 would have been $149 if it had topped the vote. The runners up are still a deal, just not as good.

i don't know the hell you guys are takking about but it sounds insteresting. Confused What is this vote for, does the winner of the poll actually go on sale for the $150. price? If so then then buying toshiba's top of the line A35 with 1080p output and tru-color rendering for $150. would be the steal of the century. Shocked
My neighobr just picked up a brand new A3 on black friday for $150. with 7 free movies and I thought THAT was a goo deal. Shocked my neighbor is about as technically uniclined as you can get, so if he has adopted HD-DVD then I think it's a sign of where the average joe is putting his money.

On Tuesday and Wednesday of last week you could have gotten the A3 through Amazon for $160 with the 2+5 movies and free shipping and no sales tax. Black Friday to save ten bucks? Thumbs Down

Wan,

It's not just to save ten bucks, it also gives you a chance to take out your anger on fellow shoppers.

Trust me you'll feel so much better after you get into a fistfight over the last Wii or trample some old lady outside Walmart Rolling Eyes Shocked

About eleven years ago I moved to Atlanta and a quick job was to work retail at Best Buy. I worked that Black Friday and was amazed at how people were buying stuff (c. 1996). But what stood out in my mind for that day was two mothers getting into a fist fight at the front of the store over a Playstation.

At the time, you had to have a receipt in hand to get the cage unlocked and be handed the product. only problem was one of the employees snatched one of the boxes before they opened that morning. That one little act caused two people to get beat up and hauled off in a police car.

I remember thinking then how much nonsense Xmas was. Bah-humbug! Santa Hates You!

The real deal was for the Blu-Ray player; I have no idea why so many voted for the Toshiba as it wasn't that great a deal.

Brian: Who cares who argues what. We haven't seen the end of things so I wouldn't go gloating if I were you. The real winner, in the long run, may be something entirely different. I brought this up as I thought it was interesting, not because I favor one format over another.

For those who didn't know, Amazon put up six trios of products before Thanksgiving. Customers could vote for one item in each trio and the leading vote getter would then be offered at a very low price to a limited number of randomly choosen voters who picked that item, starting on Thanksgiving. The runners up items would then be offered in the same way at a reduced, but not exceptional, price.

This is interesting. Top selling high def player on Amazon is the HD-A3, ranked at #14 in the electronics category. Second is the HD-A35, ranked at #37. Considering it covers all electronics (cameras, ipods, etc.), that's a really strong showing. The list only covers the top 100. No Blu-ray players (none!) are listed.

Here's top selling DVD players, including SD players. HD-DVD is ranked 1st, 2nd and 7th. The top ranked Bly-ray player comes in at #12.

This is shocking to me. I thought Blu-ray was well on the way to winning the war. Apparently not! It really looks like HD-DVD is winning, and winning in a big way.

Not that I really care. I have both! Thumbs Up

Actually, neither are "winning" anymore - for the moment. They're both just trucking along, and neither is outstanding sales-wise (either compared to each other and especially compared to SD DVD). They both have some great show-stopping exclusives, and neither has a really outstanding movie selection.

Hardware sales... Far more standalone HD-DVD players have been sold than BD players (600,000 HD-DVD vs 400,000 BD). Of course, there have also been a bunch of X-Box 360 add-on drives sold and over 2 million PS3's sold. So, while technically there are around 3 times as many BD players, HD still manages to 50-90% of the software sales (depending on month and source) that the BD-alliance does. That's simply due to the fact that many PS3's go into "game-only" duty and the owner doesn't buy movies. For every PS3 that never has a game played on it, there's another that never has a movie watched on it.

As far as movies, Amazon and some other sources put BD sales close to 2:1 over HD-DVD. In the last couple of months, though BD's clear advantage has slipped significantly. Also, depending on what source you look at, the sales ratio was a lot closer than some would have you believe.

The great thing is, with all the holiday deals from both camps, sales of the movies is going to really pick up, and that's exactly what we need. In October '300' had sold over 400,000 BD/HD copies. Considering the premium on the HD versions, that's some serious money for the studio. As sales continues to increase, hopefully we'll see more investment, more movies, more restorations, etc.

I'll be like you soon, Phil and will have both soon. At that point, I won't really care which is which anymore. Just bring on the damn HD movies!!! I can just barely stand watching SD in the theater anymore.

Don't be so shocked. Poor people buy the cheap. Very Happy

People b!tched that Blu-ray players are so expensive even though they are now one-third their original price. These kind of people never put things into perspective and look at the movies available vs the player's cost. Really, shouldn't it be both?

For instance, let's say I can get the A3 for $160 and the [Samsung] BD-P1400 for $340. But if I only see 5 movie titles I want on HD DVD and I see 17 on Blu-ray which is a better deal for me? Average cost to watch a movie title on HD DVD would be about $32+X and on Blu-ray about $20+X where X is the actual cost of the movie disk, which are about the same in my shopping world.

Obviously the Blu-ray endeavor is a better deal for ME in this example. Of course, for others it could be 100% opposite in nature, but then some are buying players on its price alone and nothing more*.

* Not based on the number of movie titles available on that platform that they buyer is interested in.

BTW, I bought into both platforms and I can imagine buying second players for both platforms by Spring '08.

Well at least on Amazon, HD-DVD players are outselling everything, including SD. But I'm not sure that Amazon sales are a relevant indicator of anything.

Ferret,

The amount of HD-DVD players sold vs Blu-ray players should certainly influence which format movie companies choose to release their movies (well, influence everyone except Sony). So, strong HD-DVD player sales should eventually result in a superior HD-DVD selection.

I'm with you SC! I still watch a lot of SD because there's just not enough of what I consider good movies being released in either high def format. Thumbs Down I don't make my movie watching choices based on HD or SD. I'm not THAT big of an HT nerd. The quality of the movie is still very much the most important thing to me. When a good movie is a poor transfer, it's a bit disappointing, but I'll always pick a good movie, bad transfer over a bad movie, good transfer.
