Newbie here.
I have a chance to buy a Zenith PRO 881 XR manufactured in September 1999. I have no idea what this unit even is! I was originally thinking of buying it to re-sell, but then I got thinking about possibly using it myself. Is this a good unit? Is it outdated? What are the potential problems that I might have with it? The seller says it works great, no problems at all.
What would you pay for this unit? Or, what would be a fair price for it?

it's a video only set with 10Mghz bandwidth, it won't even do progressive scan much less HD. It's worth about $100. If it was an 895, 900, or 1200 then it would be a different story altogether.

Welcome to the board.
Do you game? Do you have regular cable of satelite? Then this is the projector for you. It's quiet too. If you can get it for a hundred or so then why not. Just be advised that CRT's can become an obsession (disease? ).
Set it up on a smallish screen 5 to 6 foot wide and enjoy.

Yes, I can see how CRT's could become an obsession. I'm the type of person, that once I learned more about CRT's, I"d then have to have the best one!
I appreciate your generosity to an uninformed newbiie with a simple question.

You're welcome. Also, if you haven't checked out the CRT primer yet I'd sugest it as a mandatory read ( and re-read ).

Also you'll need to check tube condition.

And finaly, take a friend with you if you intend to movie it and make sure to strech yourself first. Especially your neck and back. These beasties are HEAVY!

Pull the lenses off and take a pix of the tubes and post it. If there's little or no wear, the tubes alone are worth $100. The setup remote is worth $50. THe rest of the set isn't worth much, maybe $50 for the boards?
that's the problem with video only sets now, and even low end data grade sets. They are worth more as parts than as a whole unit.
If you are interested, I'd set it up and play with it. As Analog says, use it on a small screen. As far as video only sets go, the pix is really nice. THeir reliability isn't something to brag about though, but I've still got some backup parts for the unit here.

oh you don't know the half of it. If you could see a Zenith Pro 1200 showing true HD then you would really need to check yourself in to a support group. It's like an Orgasm for your eye-balls
