Hey,

I always go to FYE and buy all the batteries I need for the year. They don't sell out so there's no need to go early. They always have AA and AAA and C batteries for free after rebate and since there's no sales tax here it comes out pretty close to actually being free.

My Best Buy has a huge line by midnight Thanksgiving so I don't think about any door busters there, it's more then insane. Plus it's like 20 something degrees F here so I think most of those people wind up sick. I usually swing into Best Buy around 10 though and there's usually some deals left over like last year I picked up Memoirs of a Geisha for $4.99. Turned out to be a bit of a waste though because eventually I picked up Memoirs on Blu Ray for $10 and sold the never watched DVD back for $1. Oh well.

The batteries thing works... My kids like to play with flashlights from time to time and the "free" batteries usually last me till the next black friday.

Get your kids a gyro-crank flashlight... LED bulbs... no batteries... they work great. I bought a 4-pack at Costco for $12-$15. I keep one in the HT. We've taken them camping. Much better than worrying about dead batteries.

Thanks,

Neat idea.

I'm still going to stock up on free batteries though... I have a 2 year old that has things like a fire truck and keyboard that use batteries.

I would think that if the USA were to put one year's worth of military spending on fusion power we'd have it already. But then those elements in government would lose all of their military supplies profiting, plus the oil--can't forget about all that oil.

Brian, my kids also have too many battery-powered gizmos. I bought a bunch of NiMN batteries and a charger. The batteries aren't cheap but I've saved a ton of $$ (and avoided landfilling a bunch of batteries) with 'em. The trick is to train your kids not to throw away the rechargeables....

I actually had trouble with rechargeable batteries in both the Home Theater Master remote and the controller for my 360. While I had hopes, they (like a lot of things) just let me down.

Rechargeable are great for things that EAT batteries like kids toys. They are not worth a dam for things that need only a little power over a long period like remotes. Recharge ables will not HOLD the charge over a long period of time. The energizer lithiums are the best battery for remotes.

Yes, some things just will not work with NiMHs -- because of their chemistry they have a lower cell voltage (about 1.2v vs. 1.5v for traditional cells) and some stuff just will not accept that. Papalek is also right that the "shelf life" on NiMHs is not nearly as good as lithiums or even alkalines.

But, that said -- I've been using NiMHs in my remotes (and my wireless optical mouse, and other similar equipment) for several years. No, they don't last as long in these low-current devices as e.g. an alkaline. So what? When they run down after a month or two, I just swap in a fresh set and recharge the old ones. No biggie. Alkalines might last 2-3x longer, but only once. I don't mind changing batteries every few months, and this way I'm not always buying new ones -- or throwing away old ones.

Tools make more sense when remodeling the house. You cant tear a fireplace out with an Ampro. Well I guess you COULD but it's alot easier with a crow bar.

I've yet to see any competitive sales around here for anything anyone I know wants. It's all early openings that are being touted in my neck of the woods. Who gives a rats as if you have to get up for work just as Letterman is ending....I want a good ole brand battle so I can sneak off into the early dawn with a killer deal damnit!

Huh. Just realized that's an ANTI Santa attitude isn't it.
Oh well. f*ck it...I still wanna killer deal. I need a 21st Century receiver. Ya hearing me BB?! Twisted Evil

I tried that last year and they NEVER had sufficient stock, either. They were no better than the retailers, IMO, and what is worse is that you have no evidence that they ever had inventory.

And I think most are looking at the electronics in terms of Black Friday deals. Tools, clothing, are only sought by uber-domesticated people. Smile
