Hk avr 240 7.1 receiver
Paradigm Monitor 70p's fronts
Paradigm cc-150 center
Paradigm ADP 150's side surrounds
Pair of older bose bookshelfs for rears until I can get another set of adp's
Older Energy 12" sub

I am pretty happy with my setup, though I need to eventually replace the sub, bose crappy rears and center channel in that order , I still think it sounds good, though the bass really needs some help, my sub sucks and my center is a little on the week side compared to the mains. The bose rears, well there bose, but not much 7.1 material so I don't hear them much and there just surrounds anyway. I also gotta say I am really impressed with the hk receiver, its amazing how clean and loud it gets for such a low watt rated amp. I understand some of the benefits of seperate amps, but I can barely handle what I have now when its turned way up and I am in a decent sized room Thumbs Up

Sony STR DA9000ES 9.1 - Also have a pair of Dared tube amps but I don't use them anymore.

There will come a time when I might split - move my MLs into a listening room with tubes and go Paradigms for the HT. Electrostatics have to be placed 'inside' the room which take away the cinema feel - there's something to be said about in wall/hidden speakers. Alot more WAF friendly.

no sub? take a look at this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/MARTIN-LOGAN-DESCENT-400-WATT-RMS-THE-ULTIMATE-SUB_W0QQitemZ270187117734QQihZ017QQcategoryZ14990QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

i added a ML depth to my other 7 logans and the improvement over my other sub was great. only the ML subs seem to be able to match the response of the ML 'stats. everything else seems a bit mushy and slow.

Vandersteen 2ce Signatures. with Vandersteen 2WQ subwoofers that work in conjunction with the mains - Main
Center Channel DIY 2 way

Mains are driven by an Ayre Acoustics V-3 (2-channel) amp. The signal is processed by a Parasound 7100 pre/pro and the 2 main channels are passed through an Ayre k-5xe pre-amp to the Arye amp. The setup is more toward stereo playback, but movies are great too.

Fronts (LCR): Mirage M5
Rears: Mirage OM-R2
Sub: Homebuilt 2 x 10"
Pre-Pro: Bryston SP1.7
Amps: Bryston 9B-TXH and 7B (sub)

Upgrade Path (at glacial pace in anti-global warming climate)
-Overall cinema sound is great but I'm still not happy with dialogue clarity. I've tried the mirage OM-C2 center channel but prefer the M5. I may try adding a second M5 for the center as I have a spare.
-2 additional OM-R2's for 7.1 system
-SMX acoustically transparent screen with fronts nicely hidden
-carpet, drywall, paint, etc. for WAF
-beer fridge for HAF.

Then again, switch the order of the last two items.

Aerial Acoustics 10Ts, driven by Krell KMA-160 monoblocks.

Center channel is a Phase Tech PC-3, which is a very good timbral match for the 10Ts.

I'll be putting a set of Phase Tech PC80s into service for the rear channels in the next few weeks,
after I get done refurbishing them. Those should blend quite well.

Subwoofer: Full custom. 2x12, 8.5 cubic foot enclosure (ported), proven to achieve 120 dB at 20 Hz,
counting room effects, fed 500 WPC (at 4 ohms) into each of the two 4 ohm drivers.

I'm amazed at how little some people are willing to spend on such an important component in a home theater. The sub's performance can make or break the "fun factor" of the theater.

I don't think it's unreasonable to spend as much on the subwoofer as you'd spend on your center channel and surrounds combined. Or even spend as much as your main L/R speakers cost.

I have yet to hear a sub that costs less than 500 dollars that I'd want in my own system. But I admit, I'm very spoiled
by what I have now. My main speakers outperform MANY subs on their own, as they are flat to 21 Hz. (Aerial Acoustics 10Ts) And there's a monster of a custom-made sub sitting in the corner that I designed and built some years back
which pushes out a measured 120 dB at 20 Hz. Not many subs play that hard, that low, even today. And they all cost
four figures. I can't find anything to compete with it that I can afford to buy. Which is a perfect example of WHY a
DIY subwoofer can be an outstanding solution.

Of all the speakers in a home theater system, the subwoofer alone is EASY to design and build and get excellent performance out of it. Anyone might take the DIY route with any other speakers, even the fronts, but it's not anywhere
near as easy or as likely that you'll end up with speakers that outperform what you could buy at retail for the same budget.

Radio Shack LX5-II for left, right and rears. No center, but I've got a few more of them for when I feel like going to 5 or 6 or 7.1. (Got them when Radio Shack put 'em on sale for under $40... I hit just about every store from North Van to Kerrisdale to find enough.)
Receiver is Pioneer VSX-816-K
Sub amp is NAD 2200, running one NHT1259 and a home-built ServoDrive ContraBass. (The other 1259 and ContraBass are offline for repairs.) I have some more powerful pro amps I could use for the subs, but the 2200 is more than enough to frighten the neighbours, and there's no fan noise. But, I would kind of like to know what "F'ing Irene" from "Black Hawk Down" would sound like with both ContraBasses hooked up to the 1200W/side AP4040.

7.1 system

Front L/R are a/d/s L-1290/2
Side and Rears a/d/s L-570 (better match than the 570/2)
Center is an a/d/s (Don't remember the model- was made a few years after the others. Dual 8" with dual mids flanking the tweeter.) Not a great match, but works until I can find another 1290/2. Or 1090/2. Or 1590/2...
6 MB Quart PWE-352 (15") in a infinite baffle.
Total of ~3.3 kw of dbx and Behringer power.
Fosgate Audionics FAP-T1+ processor. (Woot!)
A pair of a/d/s L470s as front effects for when I break out the Yamaha DSP-1 for fun.

I agree with you cmjohnson on the points you raise about subwoofers, more on that in a minute.

Front - Mission 735 Towers - older but very good sounding they are really nice got the pair for 100.00 They were the top of missions 7 series at one time

Center - Polk Cs350LS- Just got this for 100.00 a couple days ago and what a difference a great center channel makes. I am not exagerating when I say it breathed new life into the theaters audio. I knew something wasn't quite right and this speaker fixed it. I was using a mission 73c. But this speaker is by far the best center channel I have ever personally listened to. To be fair I am not an audiophile. And I don't think I've ever heard any truly high end speakers, but I know what I like, and this is a good match for my theater

Sides - Boston THX 575x dipole. They were a good deal and they work

Rears - Energy eXL XLR dipole. Again a good deal and a good fit.

Fronts powered by a Niles SI-250

Sides and Rears by an ADCOM GFA-6000

Center by an InterM R300

Now to Chris's point on the sub. Before I knew anything I figured a sub is a sub is a sub, bigger box bigger sound. Then I heard about something called an infinite baffle and after spending untold hours reading and looking at the cult of the infinitely baffled, I LOST MY MIND and decided to build a home theater IB subwoofer. I can only say that I truly hope I never have to be without it again. There is a buttload of work involved in learning, planning, designing and building one of these beasts, And they aren't exactly inexpensive, but when things blow up on that screen or something rumbles by in the movie and you FEEL it inside your body and all around you it is definitely money well spent in my opinion. You can actually design one so there aren't even speakers visible in the room. Me I wanted to see these big bad 15" speakers so I built an "outtie" box. At first with 2 speakers and within a few days I had ordered 2 more for a total of 4 Dayton IB385-8 15" IB Subwoofers. Some guys run more. If you do any reading on them you'll see that although they could reach insane SPL thats not the main attraction. What is however is that they can go so low, so effortlessly without distortion. 8-10 Hz at 75 db is something you can't ignore. I used to have bass shakers, and I liked them, but with the IB I shake in my seat without any extra machinery needed. I'm not kidding. If you don't build these correctly you can cause structural damage to your house. My neighbors 2 doors down can feel it in their living room if I forget to close my garage door. If it is closed they can still sometimes hear something akin to distant rumbling thunder if I have a good movie with Lots of LFE. It's not an unruly beast either. It is very musical and unobtrusive and then when the processor tells it to, it puts looks on peoples' faces of complete disbelief when they experience it for the first time. You have to accoustically treat the room and use room EQ wizard to equalize the sub with a Behringer DSP1124, then it goes to a Mackie fr1400i for 1000 watts of yummy LFE. But again well worth the effort in my humble opinion.
