|

Hey,
I finally got around to taking the HDfury out of the package and carried it upstairs along with the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player. My CRT is a GE Imager 601, which is an NEC 6PG that I've been using for +3 years.
The projector has the following signals configured:
DVD 4x3 (progressive)
DVD 16x9 (progressive)
640x480i (wife's TiVo)
720P (1280x720 progressive)*
1080i (1920x1080 interlaced)*
And a test input for Sony DVD
* these were configured at the time I had (and continue to have) connected a Samsung SIR-TS160 HD STB.
I've had the Toshiba HD-A2 connected to a Vizio 42" LCD (1366x768 native). The A2 was outputting 1080i into the Vizio, and it was also outputting 1080i when I connected it to the CRT projector through the HDfury. I did get am image on the screen, but I had to remind myself to change the A2's display format from 16:9 to 4:3 for the aspect ratio to be correct (or in sync with the 4:3 raster).
After all this I think I have a working picture, but two things standout:
1.) None of the previously configured signal inputs match with whatever is coming out of the A2-fed HDfury. It makes no difference what input signal I select on the CRT, it just flashes Incompatible Input for a few seconds while the plays. I've tried this with the A2 outputting both 1080i and 720P with the same net results.
2.) The projected image seems to be slightly larger than the screen width. I have a 4:3 raster to match the Draper M1300 NTSC screen (80" wide by 60" tall. About 3-4 inches of increased image width is observed on the left-hand side, and about 0.5" on the right.
I am going to assume that the output of the A2 and the processing by the HDfury are simply slightly different from the previously configured input signals. BTW, I am NOT a CRT DIY person. I had someone setup my CRT three years ago and I am perfectly fine being a user. Unless a step-by-step guidance is available, I am not sure I could even remember how to configure a new signal input.
Any thoughts?
Update:
Ok, I had to set the player to 4:3 Letterbox, and I was able to adjust the geometry so that I had not lost anything. Kudos. I do see more when its connected back up to the CRT projector, but I still have overscan and I am still getting the Incompatible Input messages.

Based on the follow from the HDfury FAQ (thanks!), I can probably rule out the DAC as being the problem. From the FAQ:
Does the HDfury change the resolution? Upconvert or downcovert?
The HDfury does not change the resolution or refresh rate in any way. It simply converts the digital input signal to an analog RGBHV (VGA) signal. It also provides HDCP decryption if needed. The HDfury outputs whatever resolution you feed it. Absolutely nothing is changed. In other words, if you feed the HDFury a 720p/60Hz digital signal the only thing it will output is a 720p/60Hz analog signal. Feed the HDfury a 1080p/60Hz signal and it'll output a 1080p/60Hz signal... and so on.
So, I think I just need to create one or two input signals that addresses the overscan. Now, trying to remember how to do this.

Sounds like you just need to tweak the CRT projector settings a bit to make the image fit again.
You say you're not a DIY person when it comes to CRT projectors - you won't need to set up a memory from scratch, but you'll need to tweak one slightly to just make the size/width fit right. It's about 10 seconds of work if you have someone there who knows PGs! (I had to do the same with my Barco). Just an image shift and slight resize.

So, you think its safe to ignore the projector complaining about Incompatible Input? I always thought that meant the signal being sent did not match those horizontal and or vertical frequency of a input already present.

Ok, if someone can guide me through the steps, like ...
1. Pickup the setup remote
2. Enter x y z to get into setup mode
and so on and so forth.

Kal, you seem to forget my stance as a user, not a tweaker. Really, I want to enjoy the setup--not train for a second job tweaking CRTs. I'll see if I can find someone to come over and offer their services. BTW, the problem is exhibiting itself on three sources and on two displays. Since the sources are working in their original setup, something is changing their outputs. Common denominator would be the HDfury.

WanMan,
May want to have someone do it for you. The early PGs were a bit harder to build the signal entry list the way you need it because it doesn't have entry move. You can delete but I wouldnt until you have everything done and tested.
Hit adjust. Passcode is 2580 on the PG, hit enter.
Go to signal entry, select entry, hit enter.
Select RGB
On yours you can select entry number or default. Try entry number first using your old input if it just need minor touch up.
Name it and store -enter
Thats the basics but read the signal entry section of the manual. You can correct overscan using amplitude. Position shift also.
The projector will use the top of the entry list first so it may go to your old settings first depending where you put the entry. Name the new ones so you know. Doug

Dang, I just had to go find the setup remote. But I fixed it. I do not know why the original 1080i or 720P Input entries were not working so I simply did a Data Copy to a new (empty) entry and the aspect and color showed up perfect. I did a little amplitude adjustment to shift the image to the right and all was well again in the household.
This is not for the faint of heart. The idea of accidentally destroying electronics like a dumb rat with the cat women is away is scary. Believe it or not, I got her hooked on this CRT projector, and then on HDTV, and most recently buying content on HD media. I was unsuccessful though in getting her hooked on a second women in the bedroom.
