that would be the average high in San Antonio in July/August. Even in my part of Canada we see these kind of highs.

Hmm. Well, any 'normal' person wouldn't have a 95F room... except for mine.... my room is always the hottest, sitting at around 82-84 during the summer (we're ghetto - we only have one big window unit in the back of the house)

I was actually the person who asked Curt the question earlier, and he responded lightning-quick, which I appreciate greatly.
The reason I'm asking is because on another forum they were talking about Magnavox RPTVs, whose CRTs like to grow the algae/deposits; and one of the members said you could just refill the CRT chamber with mineral oil. I thought it unlikely... and was wondering what other (safe) substitutes could be used, 'cos I admit I had a bit of sticker shock from the price of pure glycol.
How hot do the tubes normally run? How many containers of glycol would I need; the $46 isn't for a set of 3 bottles, is it? |
I had the same problem and I just put some liquid bleech into the glycol and after a day all the algae and discoloration dissapeared. Its been running crystal clear like that for several years now.
We already had a jug of bleech in our laundry room so the total cost was nothing.

Would bleech work good with water in a LC proj?
With 54kh on the proj and tubes I'm more worried about something exploding or causing a fire than damaging the pj or getting a fuzzy pic.
Not that I could see scanlines at 576i anyway on the blue.

It is now done.
Not too shabby considering I tilted the pj back and filled through the C-element opening and then put the C back on.
A small amount of air was still there but is not visible at any angle what I can see.
Time to put the lens back on.
I can't see any leaks. At least not a rapid flow. Time will tell I guess. See if it still holds when everything heats up.
If it doesn't explode I'm happy.
*edit*
It works fine!
It seems to focus at a shorter range now.
Edge focus appears to be superb. Although I have to test it against something else than a couch (burgundy colored leather).

Not of the procedure. I could take some of the result when I rig the pj to something that doesn't light up the floor.
As you know retros are not tilted so I have to do it manually.
The edge focus is not the best now. It defocus to almost double the line width. Not that I remember if it did before though.
The center seems to be somewhat sharper but I can't really tell.
The throw distance is the shortest I could get so it might be better at longer distances.
I also need to make or get a vga to bnc cable as the whining at video or s-video is annoying.
It also arcs at times. But that might be because it's not grounded. It doesn't do it often and usually only at startup or after a while.
It is at least up and running now.

Distillated water with a few drops of beach in it.
The shorter focus distance was expected as is optically made the C element more "shallow".
The C element nor the lens is a perfect lens so they "mismatch" focus slightly at the edge not.
Optically they should match up at some point as well as a normal LC will defocus at other distances.
I should say that there is only one focus know that moves the lens in and out so I can not compensate like the higher end lenses.
So I don't know how they behave. I would expect them to focus at shorter distance as well but with the ability to make them sharp.

Mr. Web has discovered the long-suppressed secret to perfect edge focus - always use a burgundy colored leather couch (1.5 gain or less) as your screen!
