It all depends on what sort of machine you get - some are as easy as putting two chips in and hitting a button.
Others require all sorts of dip switches to be set for each type of chip. The list goes on.
The main issue is that once the data in your Dallas chip is corrupted, its gone. You can't copy it if its corrupt - you'll just copy the corruption.
For the average person, its best just to go through the menus and write the settings down manually - there aren't that many.
Kind regards

Folks,
It seems to me that it is a good idea to save all the user data (focus and registration) to a service block as service data. I am not sure I understand why it is not done after the projector is calibrated... Am I missing something here?
Now, I if the user data has not been saved to a service block, and the Dallas chip went bad all the user data is lost. Does it mean that full calibration needs to be done? It seems to me that lens focus and scheimpflag adjustment should be skipped since the lens position did not change. I am talking about the step when you physically adjust the focus by turning the tube screws. Am I wrong again?
Thanks
Roman

I haven't tried saving user data into the service area - does it save all settings? Is there even enough room? Has anyone actually done this?

Well,
Got the Dallas chip, installed it, pressed the S202 for 5 seconds - nothing. Now I do not even get an error. It is showing 88 in red, 88 in orange, then nothing - no numbers at all - used to show 30 in green.
I tried it again, and it is either goes 88 red, 88 orange and stays 88 orange, or it goes 88 red, 88 orange, nothing.
Any suggestions?

You absolutely sure you got a chip that is an equivelant?
I hope you haven't destroyed your YA board with static RSH, did you use static gear? Or did you risk it?
• Immediately after the MAIN POWER switch is turned on, “88” is
displayed in red, then in orange, for about two seconds. This is not a
problem. The unit initializes the CPUs during this period
Do you get any activity at all? Put a source into it so it has something to lock onto, or try a test pattern where it will use internal oscillation.

Did you try to reflash the firmware?

How do I do that?
Do you mean holding the S202 button for 5 secs while powering projector up? I did that...
Thanks

Ok, if I remember correctly, you need to re-flash the firmware to the projector using computer/RS232 cable. There is a thread over at the "A" site with instructions.
You have incomplete firmware right now if I'm not mistaken hence why the projector will not power up.
I have the firmware at home and can email it to you if you need it.

Cliff,
I would appreciate it if you can.
Please email it to sales@rtheaters.com
Do you have a link to the thread where it described how to do it?

Cliff,
I got it - thank you very much.
I have a couple of questions if you do not mind.
There are 2 files there:
1. PJUpdate.zip
2. G90uv11.zip
I assume I need both of them?
I found this thread on the AVSForum. Is this a proper procedure (see below)?
| Quote: | 1)Turn Off the main power on the back of the unit.
2)Turn the index switch on the back of the unit to "00"
3)Turn ON the main power switch and the unit in STANDBY mode
4)Run the PJUpdate Application
5)Set up the Com port in the SETUP (depending on PC connection com port)
6)Set up the BAUD RATE in the SETUP TO 38400
7)Select the Working Directory and select the V1.11 folder
8)Select Emergency mode in the SETUP and then select VPH-G90 01.11
9)Select Start Upload. After that the memory data start lo load it took about 10 munits and every thing come as normal & we did not loose any thing and the G90 WAS WORKING FINE.
Please note: 1) I did disconnect the unit after use becouse Sony was saying that the reason for loosing the memory becouse power lost in house.
2) Cable for System Requirement. RC-232C Cross cable or RS 232C-> RS 422A Converter
NOTE: the RS-232 Cross cable is NOT A REGULAR NULL MODEM CABLE. IT IS A 9 PIN OUT AS FOLLWS:
PIN (FEMALE) PIN (MALE)
1 --------------------- 1
2 --------------------- 3
3 --------------------- 2
4 --------------------- 6
5 --------------------- 5
6 --------------------- 4
7 --------------------- 8
8 --------------------- 7
9 --------------------- 9 |
Will the regular serial cable work?
Thanks again

Yep. One is the software, the other is the firmware.
A regular serial cable WILL NOT work. You have to rewire it to the pinout listed above.
GOOD LUCK!!!
I flashed my 2nd G90 in the past because it had earlier firmware and I wanted them to match. It's easy. Don't sweat it.

Damn,
I only have a molded serial cable. Hmm.. need to go find one and rewire it.
Why would't they stick to a standard?
Anyway, thank you for everything.

Well,
Eventually I had some time tonight. I have made the Serial RS232 Cross Cable, connected the PC to G90 (Thanks Cliff for the PJUpdate program) and tried to follow the instructions above. The Program recognized the G90 just fine, but in Emergency mode would not initiate upload; came back with the error - to many retries, could not initiate the upload. So, I tried a regular non-emergency mode, and it began uploading the OS. It did take about 10 minutes, and I was watching the Error Window on the Projector - it was showing 11 in green while uploading.
So, the upload finished in 10 minutes with successful message. I turned the projector off, set the index back to 01, turned it on - same thing - 88 red, 88 orange, nothing. The PJ did not come out of stand by, and there is no error message - dark screen.
I do not know what else to do. I tried to call Sony the other day, but they were helpless. They told me there was a guy in Teaneck, NJ (Al?), who may help, but would not give me his phone number.
Please anyone who may help or give a suggestion what else I could do or direct me to the person who can help?
I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you
Roman

Roman,
Sounds like it's time to send your board to Curt. If you succesfully flashed the firmware and she still wont fire, something else is in the kipper in regards to pissing you off even more........

What cable were you using for the serial transfer? The COM interface on your PC, what type is it? (is it an older PC with real COM ports or a USB->COM adapter)
EDIT: sorry I didn't read the earlier part of the thread. It may be that emergency mode requires some handshaking that your current cable can't handle (eg its missing CTS or RTS) - some serial cables I've seen have amazingly only had ground, transmit data (tx) and receive data (rx) !
The fact that emergency mode doesn't work but non-emergency does means the interface might be OK but the question is why the retries with emergency mode?
RSH what happens if you put your old chip back in again and do the S202 init then do the emergency/non emergency upload onto it?
The chip might work if its getting power, its just when the power goes it will lose the settings.
Are you 100% sure the chip is the right one? Its a Y with 120 on the end? (I think lower speeds work too but I'm curious)
Curt will have a working chassis soon so he will probably be able to fix yours.
Good luck

About all I can do is check the board in another set here. But at an $1800 bill from Sony, send it to me first.
I am ramping up to do full Sony repairs, but never having had a bad G90 to repair, I'm in the beginning stages. But electronics is electronics, right?
The full service manual is here..

Curt, you're like someone I know and someone I know of. My father who could build a TV transmitter from an old clock radio and a home made soldering iron and that other bloke - MacGyver.
I have total faith in your ability to fix anything electronic or electrical.
Kind regards
(in fact, you're probably one of the few people that knows the difference between electrics and electronics)
