The G90 is the BEST CRT projector EVER produced.
Nothing can touch it.

My 808s can touch a G90 if I put it on top to get it high enough for a floor mount.

You know what I'm going to say....maybe yes, maybe no. And my response isn't based on what I have to sell cause I've got some G90's available.
Fully modded Marquee 9500.....pretty damn nice erector, I mean projector set.....lol
Runco 1101, pretty nice w/ LUG's and color filtered CElements. And very quiet.....
It will be VERY interesting to see what mods are available for this and what kind of performance increases are available.

Well then, how does one go about setting one up? Magic?

There is only ONE projector that could even come close to what a G90 could do.
Barco Vision 600.

Wrong again Cliff. Vidimagic.
I knew a day would come where Cliff would go overboard, becoming just a bit insecure about his G90 stack.
That day is here.
Right after Art switched to an insane $$ digital. Coincidence?
I think NOT!

A G90 is like the last dodo. If it gets killed, there's no way to revive it. Fortunately, a G90 always comes with its own coffin.

In about 2 weeks I'll have a G90 test chassis here. I'll be able to repair everything on it... with the exception of those CPU boards...

Talk about a breath of fresh air!!!!!
I think I have one of the highest hour units out there with almost 14,000 hours on it now.
The good thing is she is still chugging away without issue. The better thing is now you can fix it if it breaks. The EVEN BETTER thing is I have a spare.

Or 3 spares..
I'm really curious how the G90 and G70 chassis stack up against a set like the Marquee long term (or Barcos) that come in here with 50K + hours and I can resell them without fear of breakdown. I know I've seen some repetitive issues with the G70 that I don't like, and I haven't seen similar issues with Marquees or BArcos.
Someone posted a while ago that Sonys seem to be more complicated, with signal paths going all over the set, and multiple boards being involved with something like say the H sync path, whereas in other makes stuff seems to be more centrally located in one single board.
I tend to agree with this assessment. From a service point only, give me a Marquee or Barco over a Sony any day.

Yep, Sony definitely made it more complicated than they should have.
Maybe that's why the picture is so damn good. :^)

Could you clarify what you mean by that?

There's some boards that are starting to fail in what I'd consider relatively low hour sets. Pa boards, convergence boards and one of the power supplies, oh, and the CPU boards have all started going bad at random, at least that's what's been sent in.
Sure, I've had that in Barcos and Marquees and NECs as well, but not with as low hour chassis, and not in sets that were that new.

And now the truth comes out. Since AmPro came out with the X600 chassis, where would you say they fall in the reliability catagory?

Put it this way. I got a call from a guy in Toronto this AM who I sold a 3600 to a few years ago. It failed over the weekend for the first time. The LVPS is dead. Considering I didn't remember the guy's name, that means I did sell it quite some time ago.. I usually remember almost everyone, or at least the city I sent the set to, I drew a blank on this one.
Anyways, to me the weak spot on the Ampros are the HVPS. Screw Spellman and their crappy designs and lack of schematic availability. I'm not quite sure why the Marquee Spellman supplies are a bit more reliable, probably because they are not butted up to the LVPS and they run cooler in the E'homes.
So a well installed and vented Ampro is no less reliable than another set. To me anyways. Pete's opinion may differ.

Yeah, another wack ass post from Cliffy but Curt, you would be suprised at the difference between the G70 and G90.
The big BUCKS of Sony had OBVIOUSLY two different design teams for said projectors.
The only thing close is the firmware and I actually PREFER the G70 over the G90 in terms of hardware design.
The G70's tubes are EASILY made to be moved over to a replacement scenario where the G90, well, is not even close.
Much more work to be done to replace bear tubes in the G90.

A Barco is made to be serviced. A tube swap is something you can do in 15 minutes (if you know what you are doing). I hated Sony for its stupid electronics layout ever since my first CRT, a Sony 1252, which I gladly replaced with a Barco 801s just one month later

G90 is the best.
But, G70's are more fun.
