A Barco is made to be serviced. A tube swap is something you can do in 15 minutes (if you know what you are doing). I hated Sony for its stupid electronics layout ever since my first CRT, a Sony 1252, which I gladly replaced with a Barco 801s just one month later |
Barco's are made to be serviced....because they will need to be.
Sonys on the other hand are bulletproof. Servicing is an exception, not the rule!

As Kanye West might say:
Mr. Cliff doesn't like anti Sony people.

I've never seen a G90. Actually I have only seen 2 working CRTs in action. First was my original M8000 - HTPC/Extron, 7 foot screen setup, which I loved despite it being a huge ugly beast.
However, my Runco 1101 setup with a PS3->HDFury on 10' screen is an amazing improvement.
Quite a jump in size, PQ, and cost!

They're a great substitute for peni$ envy. I don't have that problem so my AmPro's are just fine

Marquees are still made today. Parts availability is unmatched by any other PJ. A well modded Marquee will cost less than a G90
and perform equally well if not better. The Marquee video chain is very simple and messes with the video signal least of all projectors.
I would not trade my modded 9500LC (with less than 300 hours on the tubes) for a brand new in the box G90 from FH Video,
even if the installation was done for me and I didn't have to pay a penny for it.

hey, don't knock the vidimagic! I have one coming in a few days
So, even though it's not a G90, it IS a crt projector... my first foray into projectors

Vision corrected to 20/10. Maximum color vision per the standard color vision charts. No astigmatism or visual aberrations. Slightly better
visual resolution than norm.
No, I'm not blind, Cliffy. Quite the opposite. But as I've never SEEN a G90 in person, I have no particular affection for them.
Besides, if I wanted an almost unsupported dinosaur that nobody has spare parts for, I'd go get those free AmPro 7000 series light
valve projectors....and they're a lot brighter than a G90 and they are good for 2500x2000 resolution.
No thanks, I'll pass. I promise I won't snag that G90 that you'll need to rob for parts to keep yours running.
My 9500LC should last for many more years to come, at the low rate I'm putting hours on it. It'll be at least thirty years before
it hits 10,000 hours on the tubes at this rate. Maybe even fifty.

I've never seen a G90 in person but based on Cliff and Clarences screenshots, plus all other comments, the G90 is the best projector no argument. For those of you lucky to own a G90, you've cerainly got the best and I wish you all nothing but the best!
Its just too bad Sony did not produce a bunch of them like Marquees so they wouldn't have been so scarce and horribly overpriced. For some reason, a G90 costing 10 times more than my Barco 1209 just doesn't seem a good investment to me. So I haven't been looking for one and I'm not going to look either. Its just my personal preference, but I will always choose best value/performance over the ultimate performance if it comes with a ridiculous price.
Its just not my style.

Cliff, let's face it.
It's not the G90. It's the setup person. Ken Whitcomb.

Yep, they aren't cheap. I paid a premium as far as I'm concerned for my stack and cost to retube but it has been so worth it.
G90's have dropped in price considerably since my purchase.
It was worth every penny then and still worth it now and will be worth it for years to come.......
Parts? Yep, those are showing up now too.
Numbnut above you hasn't been reading much because I already have a spare G90.

I would not hesitate to compete a fully modded 9500LC against a G90, any day of the week. Bring it.
HDFury going to both PJs. Fresh tubes in both. FrankenYoke IIs in the Marquee, along with Mike Parker's best V3 (I guess you'd
call it that) on the -03 VIM and neck cards, Tim's fan and P14 mods, etc. Focus and deflection mods done, and of course,
the 16:9 mod, too.
Setup by whomever's the hottest shoe in the zoo. Ken Whitcomb, or someone on his level.
I do not have any doubt that the Marquee would be equal to the G90. At LEAST.
But... in box stock condition, I don't doubt that the G90 is the king.
Well...maybe a Cine 9....
