|
|
I originally bought an iScan HD+ scaler to feed my Sony 1031q. Now that I have moved on to a Sony D50, I am trying to figure out whether I need it anymore. I am feeding the A input my HDdvd player through the iScan to an HD Fury, and I am feeding the B input with a component feed straight from my cable box. Since I could watch my sources without the scaler is there anything to gain by having one?
Thanks!
(If it helps, I have a 16:9 screen, and an AV tuner that can switch HDMI and component)

well, my scaler is getting more use as a switch well not really.
i have an extron 304. not a bad little scaler.
input 1 is the VCR (composite)
input 2 is the laserdisc (s-video)
input 3 is going to be digital TV (component)
input 4 is the dvd and HD-Fury (pass through)
inputs 1,2 and 3 get scaled to 1280x1024@72 which is the best looking (IMHO) for those low res inputs
input 4 passes through the 1080i
if i didn't have movies on vhs and ld that i can't get on anyother media i'd just have something like a moome ext-10 for the digital TV and dvds

What you gain with HD sources is framerate conversion, meaning 50/60Hz from source player you can convert to 48/72/75/96/100Hz, and you can scale the input signal to fit your display maximum, that is, for example, if it doesn't do 1080p it might do 960p, and then that resolution is what you might want, pending the PQ ofcourse.
And never to forget you still get control over video timings, like porch settings.

I don't really know much about scan rates, progressive over interlaced, and resolutions. Heck I didn't know I even had a porch! I have gone through several of the output presets, but most of them bring the set out of convergence. Am I doing something wrong, or do I need to re converge each time?

yep you need to reconverge each time, but can get close by copying an existing data block to the new sync. after you have them all set (pun inteneded) you can switch between them and see which you like best.

Ok, thanks for the info. Now I just have to figure out how to use the memory blocks on my D50. Back to the manual!
