Just doing my bi-annual checking up on the $3500+ forum at A*.

Quote:
I've been reading and participating on AVS for a very long time. I've always been a booster and an optimist. I love the advances that have been made in picture quality and value. I tend to be very loyal to my pet products, because I enjoy them so much. BUT...

This UHP lamp life thing is killing me. We've talked about it from time to time. I just read a thread where some folks were bragging about how long their bulbs were lasting. Of course, that was just a few folks, and there were several others who had stories of failures between 300 and 700 hours, and many under a thousand.

And that's just failures. These things also seem to dim down pretty quickly. They start out very bright and fill us with glee. And then, at a pace we don't become aware of until it finally just nags at us one day, we notice our pictures lack that thrill and punch they started out with. The fact is, they get dim. They lose a bunch of brightness, perhaps half in just several hundred hours. And that's when they still are working.

They aren't all that bad. My personal experience wasn't terrible. My X1 lasted over 1K hours before I sold it, the Z1 lasted about 800 hours before it blew. The AE700 was uber-bright for the first 20-30 hours before I sold it (to stick with an 8500 AC).

I realize that CRT's when set up properly in the correct room environment can last up to 10K hours. Though anyone in their right mind will likely replace the green at least around 4K hours. Blue around 6K hours. Red just goes and goes...

But I can't get over the whole part about a digital losing brightness after just 100 hours. I mean even then, it's still brighter than CRT. But it's no longer "so freakin bright that I need to change to a bulb" type bright, if you know what I mean. Well, unless you have $30-$60K like some of these guys.

Sorry guys. I'm sticking around for awhile longer.

Thanks,
Eddie
