Hi all,
I would like to get any opinions regarding the NRS I have, if you consider it worth investing about $350.00 to put in new power supply and make it 'universal', compared to the available processors? To be used with NEC XG 110 or Sony 1272.
Thanks.

philm,
The Faroudja owners like these units and like to keep them in their system esp if they have system control already programmed in.
The only thing that goes wrong with them is the power supply that I have seen. The upgraded power supply is quite a bit better and solves the lock up issues that start in the early stages or failure.
Depending on your native rate now and if you can use the higher output rates (universal) as well as needing transcoding and switching it would be up to you and how many sources your using. If your considering the new HD format DVDs and not needing transcoding then might not be worth it for you. Doug

IMHO, I wouldn't spend an additional $350 to refurb/upgrade the NRS. Spend it on a HDMI/component moome converter, instead. The moome won't scale, but the 1272 and XG will be fine at 1080i/720p anyways.
What sources are you using or planning to use? If you planned on using the NRS to upscale SD DVD, then there are better devices... especially if you're eventually planning on upgrading to HDDVD or BluRay/PS3. PS3 and any of the Toshiba HD DVD players do a great job with upscaling DVD to 1080i/720p.

didn't faroudja recently start to "silently" upgrade defective NRS units to DVP1080 mainboards when they are sent in for repair? (keep in mind that may only apply if the mainboard is broken).

I know they offered the PS upgrade on some if you did the multi output or vise versa but I'm not sure on model specific. What I do like about Faroudja is they dont call if a FRU or field replaceable unit so if it is out of warranty it doesn't cost a arm and a leg and they still will support it at a decent price. I think this is why people like to keep it.
Wish they did it on the Quad unit and the NEC 4000Q. Many still love it and dont want the new HDMI anything. Doug

Thank you all for your input guys.
Clarence,
I don't have plans right now for Blue Ray or HD DVD, in fact I don't have any source for HD presently. So 720p/1080i are my options for now.
I have basic cable going out from a Panasonic dvd recorder via hdmi to John's card in a 1272. Looks good to me. The XG has toasted tubes, so I am keeping my options open for replacements. Moone's card does sound very interesting. I will be looking with interest to XG owners for results on that.
Philip

OK, if you don't have any HD sources, then yes, an older upscaler like the NRS will still be useful.
