I had a similar problem until I built a small table to raise my 1251 up off the floor. It would constantly need re-converged (a little) every time I turned it on. Mainly in the corners. Then I built a 10" riser. this took some of the strain off of the zone convergance. Now I can turn it on and there is no more corner drift. I can watch a movie as soon as I turn the projector on. My wife is happy about that.  |
The convergence needs to be done in the middle almost everytime; a little on the corners. I will turn on the pj without the usual sony white warm-up screen (I disabled that), for about 15 minutes, then put in a movie and let it play for about 15 minutes, then check the convergence. I have the pj sitting on a small coffee table like. I also have a couple of 2x6 boards to help get the pj up higher off the coffee table. There is plenty of ventilation.
The pj I picked up yesterday is a 1272, not a 1271 like i said above. I am going to get it fired up this weekend and see what it looks like.

does it actually matter what you're projecting in order to reach operating temperature? should it be a white screen, like it used to be default with at least my 1252 or is black fine as well?

A black screen will not help get the tubes up to operating temps. I would also advise against running the white warm up screen, as this can prematurely wear your tubes. Just fire the projector up, watch a movie for 20 minutes then start making your adjustments.

Hi Wallace
One of the things that can cause convergence drift on the 12xx is dry solder joints on the banks of main transistors on the middle of the two top main boards (E and DC)
It is worth a try provided you can solder

Halo,
Thanks for the idea. Soldering is not a problem. 
Since I am now using one of the 1272's with the KF board the drifting has stopped. (Not that the KF board has anything to do with the drifting, it's just that everyboard is different than the older 1272.) But that is good info and I am going to check the boards on the one I am using now, just to make sure.
