So are we going to do the 12xx "show down" or not? I'll start- My 1251q with about 1100 hours on it running 1080i from a Toshiba HD-A2, projected on to a 102" BOC 16:9 screen. Picture taken from a Panasonic FZ5 with stock "program"settings, camera resting on my knee.
Casino HD-DVD
Not too bad for a $50 projector and a couple hours of set up.

Not bad at all!
I got to get downstairs and see what I can (or can't) do.

I gotta take some shots of my 1270. Your 1251 looks better than my 1270 I'd say. Although I am pretty sure it has more hours, and I am projecting it onto a wall with wallpaper that isn't flat

Keep them coming. Let's show that these outdated ES machines still can deliver an outstanding picture!

Nice, imprez25! You're making me want to drag the 1271 in my house around and figure out a screen so I can watch some stuff down there, too... (My Barco is in a room at my business being set up and tested while I prep my HT room).
Helps that I just scored an effectively free pair of Cerwin Vega VS120s that cause local seismologists to run for their instruments when turned up...

I've said it many times before, but given the prices of even nice low-hour 12xx's (especially in the US where they're damn near free) and just how nice of a picture they'll throw, they might have one of the best bang-for-buck, if not THE best bang-for-buck quotients of all CRT projectors. The PQ for what these things cost is just amazing. Don't forget the fact that they're extremely reliable, too. An LVPS component or a fan seem to be about the only common failures.
A G70, XG, or 8500 they aren't, but still - what an AWESOME machine - especially for guys just getting into this hobby. If I had a dollar for every time somebody walked into my theater and said, "Wow, that's just an AWESOME picture! How old is that projector??!?!?"... I'd have at least... ten or fifteen bucks.

perisoft-Thanks. You've gotta love Cewin Vega's ability to deliver great bass. A buddy of mine still has a set of CV with twin 12's and they are by far the loudest most bass heavy speakers I have ever heard. They are really good for heavy metal or rap music.
Drag that old 1271 out and get it set up!
ecrabb- I definatly agree. I paid $250 for my 1272 that ended up with slighly burnt tube, but then I picked this 1251 up that had around 1000 hours on it, but it had a bad DA board for $50. So a quick swap of cpu, da, and convergance boards from my 1272 I had a perfect condition 1251 with 21 point convergance. Now I'm getting a DA board from a forum member to get my 1272 back running and that will go out to the garage for watching football on sundays. It's really difficult for me to even think of upgrading (though I am always trolling Ebay looking for deals).

Ok, here I go: These are taken about 7 feet back with a Kodak Easy Share camera. Please don't laugh... BUt, where the HELL are my dots! The h pattern shot is when I had a 480p source, and the 1272 was on registration 1.
I forgot which pics are from what source; I was using a xa2 (hdmi to dvi cable into moome dvi card) for some, and then switched to a pany rp52 with sdi output into a HD leeza and rgbhv into pj.

Those are excellent shots! Makes me wish my cable company would at least offer HD.. since I am not in the league for an HD-DVD player yet.. I'd say it looks pretty damn good for high hour tubes.

Thanks. I need some confidence. After looking at Cliff's set-up ( I know there is no comparrasion between his and mine), everything else looks like, well, you know what.
I should have brought my wife to Cliff's place. She might have said, "Take out a second mortgage and buy what he has".
Naw, better chance of me winning the lottery.........

Also, I tried to do the optical focus using the 480p input will the pj was in the #1 registration. Was this a dumb thing to do?
I figured if I could get the optical in the best shape (trying to see the damn dots!!), it would be the same for all other registrations.
Is that wrong??

Wallace- you're right. Focus will remain constant on each memory block. I've done my focusing under 4:3 480p. It's the only way I have been able to clearly see the dots. At Higher resolutions and 16:9 they are almost impossible to see. I too figure once I get it set at 480p it should be fine for the higher resolutions. Though some tweaking might be required. This is just my novice opinion though.
BTW your screen shots look great. Do you have any HD material you can show?

The optical focus of course will be the same no matter what resolution the projector is at.. Select a low res., set contrast and brightness to 50, do an electronic focus while looking into the lenses at the tube faces(sunglasses help alot here lol), and get your optical focus as best it can be. Then set the electronic focus again(looking back into the lenses) while the contrast setting is where you have it set for viewing for even better results.

Change you name to SonyMaster!!! I tried suggestion and "I saw DOTS!!!" And no, I was not doing anything (smoking or drinking) illegal
But, I could only get dots on the green tube; and just a little tiny bit on the blue, and I could not get the red to show dots. BTW, I think I am blind now even though I used sun glasses... lol
I think the tubes have had it. I say this because I had a 1270 sitting on the floor that someone gave me about 2 months ago. When I first got it, I pulled the lense off the blue tube and could see a lot of wear; not toast yet. I put the lense back on and left it. Until last night.
I put the 1270 on the table, hooked up the dvd player, had to change the connectors to turn the picture upside down, and within 30 minutes, I had a very sharp H-pattern on all 3 tubes. Convergence was crap, but sharpness was really good.
The 1270 has pt-43 lense, so maybe that help when looking at the screen. But it was very easy to adjust the electronic focus and see dots looking thru the lenses. I could not get that on the 1272.
I just picked up a 1271 today, and need to get it downstairs to see what it looks like.
Also, the convergence will not stay in place for any of the registrations on the 1272. Everytime I turn it on after it has been sitting for a few days, I need to do convergence (just a little, but still...).
Thanks again,
wallace

As for the convergance drift on the 1272 are you using a lot of convergance? If so that might be your problem. And are you letting the projector warm up to operating temp before making changes? If not you will continually be chasing the convergance.
I had a similar problem until I built a small table to raise my 1251 up off the floor. It would constantly need re-converged (a little) every time I turned it on. Mainly in the corners. Then I built a 10" riser. this took some of the strain off of the zone convergance. Now I can turn it on and there is no more corner drift. I can watch a movie as soon as I turn the projector on. My wife is happy about that.
