I had 4 center channel speakers set up at 1/3-2/3,top and bottom of my screen. They put the sound in the center pretty well.

I now have the perfect speaker setup for center channel. Absolutely NO need for perforated screen. I have installed 2 Electro Voice LR4B speakers behind the screen. Using pink noise and a graphic equalizer with graphic display using a mic in the room they are adjusted for being behind the screen. The Pioneer automated surround adjustment makes the sound level correct. They are spaced about 4 feet apart behind the center of the screen. My screen is 10 feet wide. The LR4B speakers are extremely directional. The sound coming out of them is VERY pinpointed to the center of them. Even behind the screen the voices sound like the are EXACTLY coming from the center of the screen.


I now have changed all of my speakers to Electro Voice Pro speakers driven with 5 Carver amps and the sound is outstanding. The sound transition from one side to the other across the front is now seamless.

Its not a perforated screen, but the speakers and listener are on opposite sides of the screen? Doesn't this vibrate the screen material, and thus soften the image?

For high freqs I wouldn't worry about that. They only have 7" drivers and are only rated down to 100 Hz. I'd be real surprised if a perforated screen lets through enough air to avoid getting vibrated.

I'm just having trouble believing the Pioneer can fully correct for the speakers being blocked by screen material, but if Papalek is happy with the results, that's what counts.

Those sure are some butt-ugly beat-up speakers, but that's probably why you got such a good deal. Good thing they'll be hidden behind the screen.

They are not pretty that is true.

The Pioneer is only adjusting the volume level to balance them with the others.

The frequency response is adjusted with a graphic equalizer that uses Pink noise and a microphone in the room to show the response in the seating position on a spectrum graph. That is what compensates the frequencies for being behind the screen.

The drivers are WAY to small to move the screen. They are not subs.

The speakers have 6 4x6 drivers with a T350 tweeter in the center. They have the tweeter in the center and 3 drivers on each side the drivers are tilted toward the center progressively the first 2 next to the tweeter are almost flat the far end ones are tilted in heavily. That is why they pin point the sound so well.

They stand 4 feet tall. When I first installed them I had them setting on the floor and the voices seemed to be coming from peoples chest instead of their mouth. I now have them suspended behind the screen so the tweeter is midway and the voices are spot on now.

I have all of the front speakers hidden. I have black curtains that are just in front of the edges of the screen that go all the way to the side walls. I have raised my front left and right speakers so they are mid way up the screen and helped them sound better as well.

what kind of screen are you using? and what does the EQ curve look like-I am guessing the mids and high are pushed up a lot to correct for the screen?..
I had thought of doing this with my Draper but assumed the sound would be uncorrectable.. I need to get my hands on an analyzer!.

The screen is a Bradford electric.
There are so many drivers that the highs are the only part that is pushed up.the mids are actually pulled down to flatten it out.
I have five EQs. each speaker-amp channel is EQed individually. I am using BSR EQ-3000 EQs. Each one has its own pink noise generator and spectrum analizer with microphone input. They sell cheap on Ebay.
