It definitely has something to do with the lack of pixels as I see more detail in the background of a scene when watching my SD only VPH1000QM when comparing it to a conventional direct view TV, others have commented on the better background detail and how it helps to immerse you in the movie scene.

Add HD capability and I can only imagine it would be even better, add a blend with a scaler and it would be better still.

You can't add detail that simply wasn't filmed by the camera but you can take full advantage of what was filmed by the camera and smooth or sharpen it as needed.

I think the 3D illusion is to do with the picture not being made of pixels too, it is not a full depth 3D like virtual reality but more a perception of the difference between the foreground and background of the scene.

...that still doesn't explain how slightly increased, unspecified PQ manages to turn data showing blurry faces into data showing clear faces. Even though the lack of pixel structure makes the output of video looks more natural, the projector is still resolving all the data coming in, so I don't think that explains the perception of increased depth of field.

The other possibility, of course, is that the increased DoF people see is more placebo effect than anything else - if $1000 per foot speaker cable has taught us anything it's that monetary expenditure has a medically measurable effect on perceived results. Smile

I'll take a stab at this. I'm just shooting from the hip from reading what others have written (Mike P, Cliff, Gary, etc.), but...

One big difference I can think of - even on a 1080p digital - is that there are small pixels and screen door (yes, it's still there even on the new machines - it's just very subtle). Anyway, the square edges of the pixels, the screen door, etc. - all at the same "frequency" as the highest-frequency picture detail - compete with the high-frequency information in the image (the video signal). Your eye/brain perception mechanism has to sort it all out and confusing visually. You see it as "noise" even if you can't specifically focus on it. A CRT on the other hand may not be quite as sharp, there's nothing artificial on the screen for your eye to focus on or be distracted by. Only the image itself.

I see it as kind of like oversampling. When we have digital projectors that are at least 3840x2160 (2x 1920x1080) with some sort of real-time anti-aliasing algorithm, maybe we'll finally have digitals that will start looking more like CRTs - and film.

As for the difference between foreground and background, I see it as similar to the other effect. Take a wide shot with mixed foreground and background with fine detail in both. Again, there's no artificial pixel structure to compete with the image so your eye can sort out background imagery without competing "noise", and a better illusion of depth results - especially in a wide shot with lots of detail in both foreground and background.

That's the best I can do at 2am.
