Hello Group,
Sorry to disappear for over a month, but I had to completely focus on a business project that was on a VERY tight deadline. The project completed last week, and that night I immediately resumed finishing up the wiring in the HT. A quick status report:
Sound: On June 27th, John Allen spent the entire day in the theater, first double checking all the connections. He discovered that of the four conductor cable for the main speaker array that made up the two "paired" conductors, the pair selection was not correct, and a few hours of re-wiring ensued. The main speakers were then physically tilted and skewed to maximize the coverage over the seating area, as measured by a real-time sound pressure meter. With that done, he then went through a complete equalization and calibration of the system. Everything was meticulously set to exact Dolby specifications for all channels with the CP-650 processor at the reference "7" volume control level. This was then followed by several hours of listening to digital material he had recorded on a Tascam DA-88, and then music Blu-Ray's and finally selected scenes of Blu-Ray feature films.
After VERY careful listening, I can truly say this was one of those rare times when lofty expectations were met 100%...and then some! Three things stick out in my mind: 1) After watching parts of my favorite movies that I had viewed dozens of times before (Fifth Element, etc.), I was very surprised to truly hear things I had never heard before. 2) What I can only describe as both additional "layers" of sound, and a clarity and "difference" to the sound that I had never heard on all the other systems (including my old HT). I know this isn't a very empirical description, but the best way I can express it is like the difference between listening to music recorded on | Quote: | | "a method which discards (loses) some of the data, in order to achieve its goal, with the result that decompressing the data yields content that is different from the original, though similar enough to be useful in some way" |
(such as MP3, AAC, etc.) and the same music on SACD. Both methods let you hear an explosion, for instance, but when listening to the HPS-4000 system I could hear so many more components to the effects - the click of a timer, glass breaking, etc. 3) I have never before heard a theater sound system that so seamlessly blended the main array with the surrounds. My usual experience (mainly at commercial theaters) is to hear most of the sound information from the front array, and then the surrounds turn on (quite noticeably) when called for, but always with a perception that the surround information is coming discretely from the surrounds in an almost "gimmicky" fashion. What I found with John Allen's system was a complete sound field that worked WITH the front arrays, and not competing for attention against them. One of my favorite scenes in "Fifth Element" is the Diva's rendition of the Donizetti opera. I assume because all the surrounds are full range and John's fanatical insistence that they be placed no more than 1/2" from their calculated positions, that is why the surround information seems to be an absolute extension of the main array. I'm sure we have all experienced (and I too have been guilty of this) systems where the goal was to maximize the subs and surround effects. John is all about correctness of the program material to exactly match the studio screening room, and I really believe he has done that.
John returned on July 18th to add one more amplifier in preparation to use the 7.1 digital inputs on the CP-650.
Picture: In contrast to the "1,2,3" setup of the sound, the Hughes-JVC 12K projector has taken FAR longer to setup than anyone would have imagined. As I have previously reported, the goal here is to see how far a projector already known for a great, bright picture could be taken. Each step is literally without precedence as it is a configuration that was never put into regular production. We started out with the arc lamp. The 12K was designed (and came) with a 7,000 watt arc lamp. As the lamp technology has progressed in recent years, several of the current 6,000 watt lamps put out 20 - 25% more lumens than the older 7,000 watt lamps. The physical modifications to the lamp-house to use the newer type lamps turned out to be the easy part - the difficulty was in getting the new lamps to strike reliably. Leo Bassett has so far made FOUR multi-day trips to work on the projector. A good part of that time was to figure out the lamp situation. Fortunately that puzzle has been solved, with the lamp striking every time and no flicker to boot.
The next challenge was to optimize the various components (IR CRT's, Light Valves, valve operating frequency, etc. I'll try to summarize all the work by saying that adjusting this projector is like flying a helicopter. To fly one, the pilot has to maneuver a cyclic (stick), adjust the collective (up/down lever), adjust the throttle, and move the foot pedals - ALL SIMULTANEOUSLY. ANY movement on ANY control requires a corrective action to be taken on ALL the others. Setting up a 12K is just like that. The IR CRT's come in regular, high-contrast, and (quick) cinema versions. Same for the light valves. Now multiply that by the three colors, and understand that in order to optimize the green and red channels the components chosen for the blue channel may end up (and did) to be different types. Hour after hour was spent in hand selecting the best components from the available stock. As an example, a tube may have outstanding speed characteristics, but may not be able to resolve an ultra-fine beam spot size. LONG story short, this was a trip into the unknown. Leo has one more trip (the fifth since June 19th) planned in the next week or so to do the final tweeks.
Was it worth it? Absolutely. When you see the picture, you will swear it looks like film. There are NO digital artifacts whatsoever. Fast action on the screen looks like film. The contrast range is all I would want, even more than is needed. The grey scale is virtually spot on, and the colors (once again) look like film.
I'm now in the process of completing the wiring on the source equipment. I just set up the TIVO with a rooftop antenna for the locals, and cable for the rest of the channels (minus premiums). I also ran the wiring from the theater to the roof for the DirecTV dish. I elected to go with satellite for the premiums, mainly because of the east and west coast feeds. The network wiring has been done, and I just have to install an Ethernet hub so that everything has web access. In a few days I'm going to my old house to get the laserdisk player for those disks that never made it to DVD or Blu-Ray.
The only thing that still needs to be finished in the theater itself are the two doors that are awaiting upholstery. I can't believe how many times the installer has missed/delayed getting it done...
Give me a few days and I'll try to get some more photos posted, including that all-important "screen shot"! BTW, do you want it to be with a 16x9 or 2:35:1 film?

Thanks for the update! I can't wait to check it out.
I'm in CT this week, Chicago next week, then back to CT the following week (16-20 Aug).
After shooting Redskins Training Camp, I decided to leave my camera at home this week and just catch up on the post-processing of the shots that I already had. Take a mix of screenshots... 2.35, 16:9... different movies (the typical screenshot movies, plus animation, TV sports)... you'll know/select your favorite when you see it.

I don't know what you consider vacation but I'm in the middle of a 24/7 pretend to work for a while. That is supposed to be over at 4:00PM on Friday at which time I'm supposed to be on something that resembles a vacation. However, there's a major cluster f**c going on with a job at work. We are waiting for parts and they don't trust anyone else to do it.
So I may have to spend a day or two in Hull MA until it's done. There's a very good possibilty that I will not be able to go so I'll be accepting bribes for my seat in the megaplex
