Understaffing. Many companies have down-sized their staff. They do not have the backlog to start up-sizing, so they run by the seat of their pants. Companies that haven't gone under have sound business plans and strategic plans to get through the down-turn. They just don't have the projected cash flow to keep more people than they have projects.

Hi Chip,
I hope you didn't take my responses as being too strong. I was rushing to finish the post before running out to meet someone. I agree that the primary discussion is really the value of having a "whole house" automation "summary" system versus other ways of doing things. Don't get me wrong, I really do see what the Crestron-type systems can offer. In my case, at least, I find that other ways of doing the same thing seem to work out better, AND with existing equipment. I actually had originally planned on putting in a deluxe Crestron system, but as house systems starting getting selected, I realized how many ways they could be interconnected. One case in point are the gate openers. Unless I'm missing something, the 'normal' way is to have a gate call button create a banner or picture of a visitor on the (usually) wall mounted touch screens. Pressing the appropriate spot on the screen then opens the gate. In my case, I used an VOIP intercom box that calls all the telephone extensions in the house simultaneously. By just picking up any phone, an immediate full-duplex voice link is established. Entering a touch-tone code opens the gate(s).
I think this is a better approach than an "automation" system for a couple of reasons: first, I don't think it is practical to have dozens of touch screens everywhere around the house. With the VOIP approach, telephones are already everywhere anyway, including garages, bathrooms, utility rooms, etc. , so for less than the cost of one touchscreen, gate functionality can be achieved. (and YES, in response to previous posts, regardless of a project's budget, it is ALWAYS prudent to examine every expenditure to make sure value is really received for dollars spent. Sure, I can spend $150 or more on a "Monster" HDMI cable, but if a Monoprice cable works just fine and is really 1.4 compliant, why waste the money?) Second, phones are usually closer at hand than a touchscreen.
Other than the DDC, I haven't really considered the other systems I have as having that much automation.
I kind of looked at the systems as being separate entities that just happened to be interconnected in various ways.
Back to the theater automation discussion, I checked and the 12K projector does indeed have a DB-9 serial port that can control everything. So does most of the other equipment. Where things become problematic is when I need to show something from a 'weird' format: D-VHS, Digital-S, HDCAM, Laserdisk, etc.

The surrounds were installed about a month ago. They are hidden behind the grills, which cover acoustically transparent fabric.

Beautiful, Arnold. Just awesome. Seeing the seats in place... Wow! Man, it's looking finished!
I love the combo hammer drill/vacuum attachment, too... Looks like a piece of PVC drain elbow on there. I'm gonna guess those guys have put a few of those seats in before!!! What, about 224 holes to drill... That's a lot of drillin'!

Ingest Arnold, Ingest. Just stick everything on a server. In case of a last minute need to display a weird format arrising you need to get to the equipment room to stick in a tape or a disc anyway, so no need to automate/remote control that.

That was only step 1. At the end of the summer, vacations should be over and the house should be completely done. At that time we'll definitely have an event.

Since the space was designed for charity use why not have a charity movie night. If I was in the area I would pop $50 to $100 bucks for a ticket. Heck, I might even use up some miles and fly in for it.

I had an empty electrical box placed in the rear "knee wall" in back of the middle seat (row 7, seat 8) for the control cables. That seat is in the exact vertical center of the screen, and horizontally centered in the room. The space below the risers is a storage space, so I can add a conduit to other locations (such as one row forward), if needed. I'm not sure if one row ahead wouldn't be a better experience, even if you have to look slightly up. Until a picture is actually on the screen, I'm holding off on my "reserved" sign...

The first charity event is being organized for September or October. It's for Connecticut Public Broadcasting. I don't want to scare you, but they're bringing in a national celeb, and you'll need to add a couple of zeros to the ticket price.
The Curt Palme event is a MUCH better deal!
