|
|
Yesterday, I was on eBay looking for some items for work (really). I did a search for "NEC remote" to see if I could find a remote for my PG+. The first item in the result list was the XG-110LC with service manual and remote. (item: 250156832159) There was about 30 minutes left to go and the bid was less than $200. The item was listed by one of the "iSOLDit" operations in Minnesota. There was no indication in the listing about tube condition or whether it even worked. The fact that there was a service manual gave me pause also. I thought of the possibility of having it sent to Curt before paying to ship it all the way out here. I thought that this would be OK, but it did seem kind of presumptuous to count on that without asking first. I did try to put in a $300 bid in the last minute, but while I was entering the bid the price went above $300. The final price was $355.
Could be a good deal. Could be a money pit.

Ha - I was bidding on that too.
I managed to call the store and get them to run it through its paces a little. The guy said the tubes looked "milky white," and had no discoloration and that it had 2,135 hours on in I lost it with 21 seconds left and couldn't get in a higher bid. Looks like it slipped through both of our fingers.
Oh well, I picked up a 6 PG Xtra this morning for $85... it looks a little beat up and needs a remote, but we'll see. Can't beat the price. And apparently they are sending it freight for only $75. How, I do not know, but I just talked to the company and this is what they told me. It powers on and the tubes looked OK from the pictures. Fingers are crossed!
So that said - can somebody tell me why the 6 PG Xtra will not do 1080p? I'm guessing I really wouldn't want it to, but on paper shouldn't it be able to with its scan rate?
Also, can I just use a computer into the remote interface to set it up?
Will

Oh - one more thing - it wasn't an LC though. Just an XG-110.

How'd I miss that one? I could have gone to look at it. I could have picked it up and saved shipping! And the photo of the back does say XG-1100, but not LC. Is that normal for NEC XG's?

There is/was an NEC XG-1100LC listed on the Minneapolis Craigslist for $1,800 - wonder if it's the same one?
Edit : Nope, it's an NEC XG-135LC.

I was ready to drive there to pick it up... nothing like a nice 11 hour drive to calm the nerves, especially when there is a beautiful projector in the trunk!
I think the branding on it means it was definitely a non-LC unit. Also, it came from the Edina School District the guy told me, so I doubt it is the same one from Craigslist. I really thought it was going to go for even cheaper than it did - sat at $125 up until 1 minute left and there were two dudes just outbidding each other by $2.50 for like 3 days. Oh well.
Any 6 PG Xtra owners here - how will this compare to my trusty old 1252?

Remember, it's not only H scanrate that you need to look at. The bandwidth rating of the projector is really the determining factor on wether or not the electronics can properly handle that kind of signal. The PG xtra can handle 80Mhz. Some say the true bandwidth needed for 1080p is around 150Mhz. Also, tube size is the major determining factor. Most would concur that only a 9" tube can fully resolve 1080p. While Mike Parker and a few others have gotten a very sharp 1080p on 8" machines, those are highly modified(MP8500) or high dollar(G70,XG135LC) machines.
And yes, there is NEC control software to control the PJ via RS232. Here you go: http://www.curtpalme.com/docs/NEC6PG+Extra_9PG+Extra_ControlSoftwareV30.zip
And the Pg xtra should be a major step up from a 125x. EM focus, baby!
Hope that helps,
C.

Sweet- well now I have to wait until Friday to see what condition it is in...
I picked up a Pronto for $60 which apparently has a really good setup written for control of the PG Xtra & XG, so hopefully that will allow me to set up the unit even if the PC control doesn't do 100% of the stuff. That plus my HDFury hopefully arriving Thursday will make this a fun week !
Thanks for the help! And if it's not too much to ask... root, root root for the Brewers 2nite against those pesky Cubs!

No Problem.
Ned Yost is a Bobby Cox disciple. And, he is a great coach. Your Brewers will be just fine. . Maybe the Braves and Brew crew can meet in the playoffs. If not this year, maybe next

FYI,
You need a 'real' service remote or a endless supply of Zoloft. Remote is cheaper. Doug

Well, I may as well go get the Zoloft for this Brewers game anyways...
So what makes the Pronto not a good solution?

You should have a look at the post by Kschmit2 in the "necxg 135 and xbox360" thread -Kai has some spectacular pics taken from his PG6+ at 1920x1080i 96 (this is the same bandwidth as 1080p 48 ) and looks great!!
I have used these setting to start a new block on my PG-and it handles the setting fine, so far my image is soft but I have not spent more than 10-15 min. on the setup yet!!

No worries - just wondering what I did to piss you off...
I realize that I'm new-ish here, but I'm not an idiot and I'm not a jerk, so sorry if something I said rubbed you the wrong way. One of the reasons I like this forum so much is that everybody seems to want to help... everybody. I hope that I can make some contributions and even more with every experience I have with this stuff.
As for the remote, if I could find a service remote for a remotely decent price I would definitely purchase one, but the only one I can find is $180, and that's not happening. I paid $150 for my 1252 in nearly new condition, and got this 6PGx for $85... I can't stomach paying twice the price for the remote!

Doug was being direct, but hardly pissy. A Pronto is an awful solution for a complete setup of a projector. Use it for after the PJ is setup, but you'll only drive yourself nuts using one for a complete setup. Better to spend the $50-100 or whatever the remote costs.
Being that Doug has been an NEC tech for the last ~80 years, I think I'd listen to whatever he says.
