Found this on fleabay:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=280144691266&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=018

Are these parts that VDC would use when they replace the cathode ray gun during a re-build or is this for a CRT projector that doesn't use conventional tubes, e.g. some kind of setup where the cathode ray gun can be replaced as needed?

Now if only I had a CO2 laser, phosphor spraying equipment, glass forming equipment and a vacuum pump I could re-build CRT's the way VDC do........YEAH, RIGHT!!!!!!!! Laughing

Google up "eidophor" and see... I'm surprised to see NOS emitters for that old beast.

So I was kind of right, it is for a CRT PJ that uses a different system, I was thinking of something with a built in vacuum pump but thought it would be a mechanical nightmare with all the seals needed and a vacuum pump to wear out.

I was surprised to read that the cathode ray guns last only 100 hours though Shocked but add the xenon lamp with it's inherent problems (like exploding) and it makes the modern digitals look not so crap, I will still stick with conventional CRT PJ's though. Wink

Supposedly the Eidophors had all the benefits of CRT with the light output of multi-kilowatt lamps. They were in production for some time.
There was a history thread recently that had links to some neat info on this system.

The Eidophor's had the smoothness of CRT ( the CRT's were used to 'paint' a picture on the surface of a liquid under vacuum. Thus no pixels ) the latter light valves substituted an LCD pannel where the liquid/vacuum chamer was. Still super bright as you could add the brightes light you wanted to. IT's a reflective technology like DLP but worlds better. Eidophors were in use 'till the year 2000. Too bad we can't get these surplus with all the parts needed to run them. It would be fun. Clarence had a couple so did Papalek.

Here's the origional thread we talked about this in:
