Blah blah.
I built my PC from all second hand parts except the video card.
It plays HD-DVD perfectly, at 95.904hz exactly, for smooth motion, with my exact custom resolution.
And it's flexible, it's a media library, and records OTA HD with 3 tuner cards.
The upgrade to make it HD-DVD capable cost about $600. More than a low end Toshiba player, but then I'd be stuck with the generic 1080i 60hz and JUDDER.
And I'd have a decent PC anyway. It's not a dedicated HTPC, it's my main PC.
I'm quite amazed actually. At the moment it's WORKING PERFECTLY.

I tried 71.93hz on my ATI x850 to see what it would be like on Nvidia 8x00. The smooth motion is gone and it drops a frame about every 10-20 seconds.
This is sofa king irritating.
Consider-
8800gts - ~$300 cdn
2900xt - ~$450 cdn
8800gts kicks the 2900XT's ass in just about all game benchmarks
8800gts uses less power, runs cooler/quieter
2600xt is much cheaper but for games it's very slow
2400 is absolutely worthless for gaming
8600gt under $100 with rebate but still the refresh rate problem
So it's either an overpriced 2900xt, a cheap but wimpy 2600xt, or an nvidia card and stuttering unless I use a 4 digit refresh.

Well you could wait for a 2700 or 2800 series ATi card.
I rarely game, so a 2600XT GDD4 was good enough for me.
Hmm...might fire up Half Life 2 and see how it goes.

Hi there
From what I've seen, the nVidia control panel will only preserve the first settings you save. If I want to change the porch settings, I play around with the values to determine what I want. Then I delete the video drivers, reboot using the default WinXP VGA drivers, install the nVidia drivers, and then setup the new settings.

What I did was I applied a small register hack which brought back the classic nvidia control panel. After installing that one and updating to the latest force ware it was smooth sailing from there on.

Can you expand on what you just said? What did the register hack allow you to do?

The custom timings works just right for me now with the latest force ware and after bringing the old classic nvidia control panel back.
To bring the classic nvidia control panel back all you need to do is this.
Copy these lines:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
; NVIDIA Windows 2000/XP Display Coolbits file
; Copyright © NVIDIA Corporation. All rights reserved.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NvCplApi\Policies]
"SedonaDisable"=dword:00000002
Open up notepad and paste those lines into it.
Save the document as sedona.reg then run it and add it to the registry.
Reboot, you should now have the option of choosing which control panel you want to use back under the Geforce tab in display properties, settings, advanced.
Worked like a charm for me!

Ooooo sounds interesting.
So in short, you are saying you get EXACT timmings for your 8800 card to the 4th decimal point as if you were using powerstrip but just using the Nvidia driver?

can you get exactly 71.928hz? Judder test is a good way to report the actual hz.

I've managed to get a 720p signal displaying on a Barco Data 800. But it won't take 1080i (nor 1080p, but that's normal). I've set both syncs on (-). Do you have any ideas where it comes from? Can it be the porches?
The second question is more about the 8800. I've created a new profile (the 720p setting), but I can't display it. When I try to activate the 1280x720 resolution, it takes the default resolution (probably one with positive syncs, because it doesn't work). I haven't found where my custom setting could be displayed. Can anyone help me out?

I believe that both your problems might be caused by drivers.
Newest drivers have some sync problem with Barcos, it's miracle that 720p works. 
Nvidia drivers have had problems to store custom resolutions for long time. Usually you can store settings to registry only one time, after that new settings can be chanced but after boot first ones are back. Custom settings are stored over default settings if similar settings exist.
Nvidia drivers get worse after every upgrade, I have already Radeon waiting in my shelf...

I was afraid of that...
Do you know if any driver works? Right now, I'm using 162.18, but maybe I should try the one I got on the CD?
And actually, 720p didn't work either...
I thought I was testing the Barco, but I don't know what I tested, because the other monitor can't display 720p either.
This is trickier than I thought...
