Assuming you don't want to build your own, I always recommend dealing with SVS. They are great guys, and if you give them your room specs will recommend some good choices. For reference, I run 2 CS Ultras tuned to 16hz which are admittedly overkill but a WHOLE lot of fun

Ask Cliff about SVS. They absolutely ROCKED the house when I heard them.

Me too! I can attest to the high quality product as well as outstanding customer service. Emails are usually answered within hours and they even will offer discousts if things get upgraded. For instance they have upgraded the woofer for the ultra's an I can get it at a discounted price but I'm not sure it is necessary for me.
I have my ultras sitting on top of my Khorns(these put out amazing bass by themselves) and I have an RSW-15 in the back of the room, however my room is fairly large (25'x30').

I have the PC-Ultra which is the powered version of the CS.
Eriks room sounds horrible
SVS are good guys, I have sold their subs to a few of my customers and they have all been happy. Actually about to order one for another client.

I'm thinking about diy speakers but I worried that most of the diy solutions only offer "bang" for the buck and not necessarily quality. I've looked at svs for a sub and certainly the new PB13 is very tempting but also costs quite a bit. I'm just curious as to what kind of performance I could achive with one of the diy speaker kits such as the 15'' titanic kit you guys have mentioned. One thing I'm really looking for is depth and I know svs is known for this, but like I said I'm just unsure if diy is just all about being loud and not very articulate. Any input would be appreciated.

I will always go with an infinite baffle subwoofer if I have a choice. My bass is so deep, low and distortion free, watching movies on a 120" screen you actually feel like you are right there sometimes, plus if you like a good tactile response its definitely the way to go. Practically rendered my bass shakers obsolete

OK, still looking. I've found a couple offered locally: Klipsch KSW-12 for $240 OBO, Paradigm PS-100 for $250 OBO. Could probably get either of them for $200. Both of them seem to get good reviews. Or I could keep looking for a bargain on an SVS, but $200 is probably about all I could justify at this point. Thoughts?

How about a used Paradigm Servo15? I use a pair and they sound great without breaking the bank!

Look for NHT. We used to seel those and the sub they sold w/ the super zero was pretty nice. Not amazing but nice for the price it was a bargain.

My el-cheapo sub solution last winter was to grab a $50 Pioneer car sub from walmart, slap it in a big honkin' enclosure from a speaker whose days had passed (modified to create the right space) , add four biggish 1-ohm resistors bolted to a block of aluminum, and run it from some old 150-watt Yamaha receiver I had lying around. Not the best thing in the world, but it thumps, and the total cost was fitty bucks.
Car subs are filthy cheap; my guess is their response pretty much sucks, but the quality of the sub output in movies in my experience isn't as important as in music - 90% of the time it's either "oooooooom" or "thump" anyway!

You could also think about a pro audio sub... there are literally thousands of off-lease or rental house subs out there that would kill in an HT and are able to be had for cheap. If you ebay, try looking for a single EAW, Renkus Heinz or Bag End. Most pro customers don't want a single sub so they'll go for even cheaper. Then you just need to power it.
I have a pair of QSC HPR-181s that would explode your heart if used in an HT setup... dunno about you, but that's what I want when watching "Seabiscuit."

Without knowing any name brands and models your suggestion would be lost on someone like me. Care to assist with some examples?

As I just found out from experience after jury-rigging a quickie HT setup with the 1271 that was sitting in my living room, sitting right between a pair of Cerwin Vega VS-120s will render a subwoofer a moot point. I fired up The Fifth Element, and there were some spaceship flyby bits where the bass actually made the couch cushions vibrate visibly! I've been in lots and lots of "4D" theaters with big bass shakers right on the seats, and these Vegas made them look like those little ceramic speakers you get in a birthday card.
Mein Gott in himmel, these speakers are loud. And I'm only driving them to 1/3rd rating! Screw subwoofers, I'm just gonna find some more of these, and aim four of them right at the seating area! Visitors will have to comb their hair after the movie's over!

Those are the ones. Believe it or not I traded them for a pair of Altec Lansing 10" two-ways... guy said the Vegas were too big.
Apparently Vegas get a bad rap from 'audiophiles' but as far as I'm concerned these things are f*cking fantastic. The only problem is that when my blackberry goes off near the laptop when they're connected, the whole house shakes from the interference...
