Recently I was watching Spiderman 2 superbit DVD and noticed the whole picture on my screen kind of expanding and contracting somewhat. This action was distracting and occurred for several seconds and intermittently throughout the movie. Previously at times I have also noticed this on some internal video test patterns but mainly just at one of the corner/side of the picture. I have checked the video image on the CRT tube faces to make sure that the image was not going off the tubes. Looking inside at the bottom of the CRT tube faces (near widest part of image) there is still a bit of space between the edges of the video to the edges of the CRT tube face. I know my rasters are off the tube face. I have set up my G90 at about 115” from my 16:9 92 inch wide screen to maximize phosphor usage.

I have a Toshiba XA2 feeding my G90 via hdmi cable into Johns DVI card in slot C on my G90 directly at 1080p.

What do you guys think the problem is?

Would shifting the picture closer to one side of the raster or other make a difference? If yes which side should it be closer too?

No I just checked it and it is turned off.

I tried testing for the expanding/contracting again this time using the HD DVD Matrix Reloaded. During this movie I did not notice any expanding/contracting like I did a few days ago with the Spiderman Superbit DVD. However when I turned on the crosshatch test pattern I could see some expanding/contracting of the pattern especially on the sides.

Just wanted to drop a note that this issue I was having has disappeared. Rock steady picture and internal G90 test patterns now!

In case this helps someone else this is what I discovered.

I use to run the Sony G90 warm up screen for about 10 min. Ever since I stopped using it the problem never resurfaced again.

When originally mounting my G90 I moved it closer to the screen to allow for more phoshor usage. This caused the internal G90 warm up image to also increase size. The warm up screen appeared to just go off the phosphor edges near the larger part of the internal G90 warm up image (bottom part of the phosphors when PJ ceiling mounted). I originally thought that the warm up image did not go off the edges or that somehow the G90 would scale back its internal warm up image to stop just before the edges but it probably did not.

The warm up screen should be tied to the P5 test pattern. I have not tested this but if this is true then I could have just pulled in the warm up image (indirectly using P5 internal test patterns) a little to also resolve this issue. For the time being I have decided to not use the Sony G90 internal warm up image. Currently I either just turn on the G90 leaving it in standby for about 20 minutes (also get double bonus of having the AKB line disappear - hate it during dark scencs of movies) and then start watching a movie or I just use a 16:9 movie source for about 10 minutes.

Frank

You mean you moved the PJ forward.

Ever sense I started using more phosphor then what was recommended, I keep a real close eye on the edges of the screen to make sure it does not go over it, will even take a quick look at the tube faces from time to time.

I have also noticed that some movies will not be the same width.

Yes, your right. Thanks for pointing that out. I did intend to mean moving the G90 forward.... It is now corrected ... It has been a long week and its getting late Shocked

I also use blanking to help keep the video image from going beyond the phosphor edges. That being said I am probably about 3 to 5 mm at the widest part (bottom part of image with PJ ceiling mounted) of the video image from the phosphor edges.
