A few more from a not so warmed up projector...

Did some CPC work this morning on the left PJ, much sharper Grid lines, this also helped the blend zone on that side. Tomorrow i'll try to work on the right half. Still need to tweak it more as the grids move with focus ramping. Wish there was more room to maneuver the focus coils! Arrggg!!!!

I picked up my Wilsonart DW screen today and spent the nite after work, 4hrs in total, moving the projector back and tweaking EVERYTHING, all but the G2 and flare controls. Love the material so far, well controlled hot spotting. All images are DVD's with unsharpened mask turned on in ZoomPlayer MAX, 768p. I'm impressed for what this quaint projector can do but I know I can get more out of it yet.

Astigmatism and Bias Focus on the RGB tubes adjusted. Lenses refocus and aligned, overall convergence done 3x.R1 and R5 pots adjusted on the Waveform Generator board to correct red color shift on right side of screen. Remaining pots R2-R3, R6, R7 adjusted for better grey scale. Still a lot of tweaking to do and adjustment with the G2 power controls. I won't be doing that until I get a grey scale calibrator.

All are 70" wide

1 thing about the ringing
i got curious and mailed vdc
then a tech replied and told me the ringing is yoke related and by swapping out the yokes this problem should be gone.
unfortunately i dont have the reply mail anymore from vdc cause i had to reinstall windows because of some very weird ie failure.
i have got zero ringing on the left side in my marquee so there is surely a way to get rid of it completely.

So your saying without a VP and using FAST RETRACE you have no ringing at 1080p. If you're using slow retrace you're not getting "the full picture" (pun intended).

MP, I want to thank you for the mod to the convergence board. Installed the ground strap with great results.

So what did you change to get rid of the ringing?! Or was your Marquee ringing-free right from day one? I would be really interested in a solution that doesn't require a VP...

You'r lucky! I get the ringing even on 1080i when set to short retrace.
From the "ST" in your serial # I guess this unit was made for stereoscopic projection. Maybe those machines have some improvements that eliminate the ringing?

VP = Video Processor. Can be used to adjust timings to get rid of the ringing.

If you shorten the HDM cables it might help. its the capacitance in the Deflection coil windings that also cause the problem( TSE info). Some Deflection coils will ring more than others. Why? Who knows, maybe the batch of copper was better in one set than the other, maybe a slightly heavier gauge its all speculation.

I really dont have the ringing at my res for the blend, 1064x800p@72 for each PJ. I am going to try 1064X1200p@72 soon to see how that looks.

hi nashou, i dont really believe in better batches.
i have zero ringing at 1920*1080 72hz.
its really some coils that cause the ringing according to vdc and i believe them cause he gave me the part numbers.
as i remember the mail it were 2 coils that were responsible for the ringing so both have to be swapped.
i would mail vdc they certainly can tell you how to obtain the ringing free coils.
expect somewhere around 24:00 to get pictures.
btw retrace long and short doesnt bring in the ringing.

i am using a pc with a ati4890radeon and powerstrip.
here are the settings.

We'll be looking at the ringing most likely next week, but to be clear here, ringing is always related to coils and/or inductors, so it's not caused from the VIM. I can manipulate it on the VIM but the problem is caused from the back end of the horizonatl deflection circuits.

We'll start on this soon. And when we do, we'll pick it up on scope showing it before it gets to the final stage of the yokes.

From there we'll get a better understanding on what causes it and what we can possibly do to make it either go away or minimize it. I'm thinking we might end up with one of the coils mounted on the yoke, but I could be wrong.

We'll see.. Very Happy

That's a pretty rare Marquee you have there. My experience with this ringing is that I've seen it on every CRT projector that projected 1920x1080P 60hz or higher. Not sure why you're not seeing it. And because you're not seeing it does not mean it's not there. It varies from projector to projector, model to model make to make, but it's there depending on what scan rates you use.

Oh, when you chat with the tech at VDC, ask him to also inform tse (Scott) of the coils you mention. Not sure why he would not know about this. When I was there he was the big technical cheese in that camp.

hi mike when i am at it i will try to shoot some photos from all of my coils and see if i can find the part numbers on them.

i havent tested the pj with the hdmi vim but will do so when i get it from moome
maybe its the correct timing through powerstrip and therefore i am curious if the ps3 will show me the ringing.

Your have no ringing because your timings are what they should be for no Ringing. the large back porch of 316 and the timing value of over 1.5us is helping you achieve no ringing. lower your timing values and ringing will rear its ugly head. Also if you keep the raster over to one side it helps, but with that large back porch you should have no problem. Also Everyone with a marquee should keep the sync timing at 1us or higher.
