My 808 is color corrected. Last time I checked with the colorimeter the colors were very close to 6500k. That was with an i1 and HCFR. Now, I do have a gamma/luminance issue, but have never been able to figure that out. Perhaps bumping up the blue and red gain a few notches would help? Thanks for the honest critique!

Oh, and on a side note... My last eye doctor appointment I was told that I lack green receptors in my eyes. In turn I have more blue and red and thus see blue and red sharper than normal sighted people. Thankfully the colorimeter doesn't suffer the same issues! (I hope)

Sharpness looks good, geometry looks good, black level looks a little high and The color level is low enough in intensity that it's hard to evaluate color balance.

Solution: turn brightness down a bit, turn color up & try again. You have a start on something really good there. For comparison, here's a few 5th Element from my toy...

I did what you suggested, turned brightness down a few notches, then increased the red a few as well. The blue I left the same. I looked at my last HCFR chart and It looks like the red is slightly low from 30-70ire which is probably the range of most content, so bumping it up makes sense.

I can honestly say it looks better! thanks for the suggestions. I'll have to do some more HDR shots now. Smile

Where are you making your adjustments for color? Sounds like you're tweaking the grayscale. It could be that the brightness and contrast settings for each color (grayscale or white bal.) are so low you are not getting saturation. If you wrote them down whwere they were when you posted your Cars shots a few months ago, return them there and do your adjustment with the main brightness, contrast and color settings in the basic picture menu. You were very close before; correction to the contrast and brightness was needed - more brightness, less contrast. Read Kal's calibration guide, it's quite thorough. Keep on posting!

I made the color adjustment in the white balance area and increased the red gain. I think it looks a ton better now. do you think the cutoffs are wrong? Thanks for the ideas.

Grayscale controls are red, green & blue brightness and contrast adjustments for each color. The brightness (black level) controls are often called cutoffs or bias. They control the bightness or overall level of each color. I suppose you could think of them as Red Level, Green Level & Blue Level. If they are set too low you will lose intensity in those colors. The contrast controls are often referred to as gain. It controls the contrast (white level) of each primary color. Just for fun, find a movie in your collection that has a THX optimizer on it. Cars will have it. Find it and do the video tests using the contrast, brightness and color controls in the main picture controls of your PJ. You do not have to go into the service menu for this.

I could get the thx logo to appear but i had to crank the brightness up to like 70. now this was playing a standard dvd in my htpc, which I normally don't do. It looked very gray. Anyways, I may have to use patterns from avshd instead.

Here's my current settings;
cutoff; blue = 42, red = 55
gain; blue = 52, red = 23

when this unit is set to midpoints it runs way red, hcfr recorded the red output at 145%.

Thanks!

When you change your gain and cut settings you will affect your grayscale color balance. What Fellenz meant by filtered is do you have tinted glycol or colored C elements on your red and green? When you display a white field to warm up the tubes it should look like this if your PJ is fitered. Notice the color of the green and red tubes. If it is not filtered all tubes will appear white

This is a post viewing session with my better half holding court. FYI, that's me on the right.

Back to the PJ; Do a black level and contrast first, then tweak your cuts and gains using your colorimeter to achieve 6500 (or close to it) Put up a 20 or 30 IRE window and adjust cuts. Put up 80 IRE window and adjust gain. You will most likely have to go back and forth several times to get both close. N.B. always use 20 or 30 IRE (dark gray) for cuts and 80 IRE (near white) for gains.

Here's a good black level test...

Hope this helps.

As far as I know the pj is not filtered it just has color corrected lenses. Thanks for the info! I'll play a little more and see what I can do.
