OK, so you guys are all good on these docs to be posted on the site? I need to write the convergence one, then I'll consider these to be complete...

Currently doing my first setup of a 6PGxtra (only 342h and as new optical appearance of the internals) and had a look at your doc about a day too late. What I like very much is the comments like
"Additional disclaimer: ... these do normally not need adjusting..."
because I kinda get confused about what you should do, what can be done and what you better should not do. (Shouldn't have started reading this community stuff in the first place)
On some other board you stated not to be too specific in some settings because this is your company knowhow. Also you don't advise homemade mods but try to stick to the factory design. I think it would be worthwhile mentioning that in the Disclaimer.
It is good that you sometimes quote other widely spread advice and comment if you agree or not. You could do it more often. I could also understand if you only want to install good working projectors rather than convert some other "experts" opinions.
Appreciate quantitative statements over vage ones when appropriate. E.g. "Usually I find that the left and right edge focus need to be high on the positive side, something between +50 and +90. " is better then nothing and much better than "you can carefully adjust the x trimpot on the y-board"
Finally I should wait for the PG doc to be posted but I just can't keep my shabby fingers of this toy
Thousand thanks to you and your team for the company philosophy and sleepless nights.

There already is a PG setup guide on this site. Tinman and Feathers wrote it. Tinman is Marc, I dunno who Feathers is, he disappeared years ago.

Plus it has been revised with PICTURES!!! Now easier than ever.
It explains mostly the mechanical setups and is worth a read.

With the setup stuff, I'm not really hiding anything. Your settings will vary, they vary from set to set, so saying something like 'focus should be +80 on the left and right side. I'm accumulating these articles from memory, the sets that are in the shop now and corrections by others here.
I think most people here would agree, those that will tweak stuff they shouldn't will do so regardless of any warning. THey then come back, tail between their legs going 'ummm, can someone help, I played with stuff I shouldn't have'.
or
'you sold me a projector that doesn't work. Fix it. Now. I know I bought it 2 years ago, I just got around to installing it yesterday'.
<grin>
(I don't think I've ever had that call or email before... )
Actually, the main reason I wrote is to try and reduce as many emails and tech support calls as I can. Everyone agrees the NEC manual stinks. My writeup with more color pictures should be better, but probably not perfect.

You almost need a second chapter - Linearity Balance, Line Distortion, Coarse/Medium/Fine Point...etc..

That is supposed to be Tinman has feathers. An absolutely excellent document that introduced me to PG setup.

The really great part of this (for me) is all the little side notes. For instance, how it's OK for Keystone to require a large setting to get straight sides, and that it's OK to have to crank the side focus way up. I'd always heard that turning any of the settings up past +/-20% or so put a lot of stress on the electronics, so I was rather worried about the fact that I had to go higher than that to get a well-converged picture.
I think that this is the real value of such a document. Most of the rest you can get from reading the manual (although for NECs, that's a bit of a test of linguistic gymnastics), but information like that can only come from years of experience.
Thanks!

Curt, you call Pincushion "Bow" in the doc.
Also, do you want to mention turning the Deflection Yokes to minimise TILT?

Hey Curt,
How is the document coming along? I'll be needing this soon when I start to setup my new XG 1101LC. Are there any major points missing in this current rev. that I should know about? I only setup my original XG once so I'm still a newbie at this.

Fresh eyes always have questions:
| Quote: | | 2) Do a full setup three times on a projector. Each time you should notice a significant improvement over the previous setup. |
Do you zero out the prior set up and start from scratch each time(and each try is practice) or is this intended for incremental improvement?

You definately should zero out the setup prior to the inital one done by yourself. I would guess do it again for the next one that way you will get the chance to touch every control when you go back through setup hopefully improving everything. I'll probably set mine up 3 times and zero out everything each time.

Thanks Curt. I know my PG inside/out but your docs have lots of good tips for setting up my new XG.

Curt,
I know your a very busy and important man , but have you gotten a chance to do any of the changes to this document? I'm looking to begin round one setup on my XG and this document is a great place for me to start, just want to make sure I won't miss anything major. Thanks!
Nate

I have that one, Curts, and Guy's all printed out in color in a stack with the PG setup/user manuals. Each has of the guides adds a little more.

It's my fault, I have not been motivated to do much on the site for some reason. AS luck has it, I have an XGLC on the bench now to take the last of the linearity balance and coarse/med/fine point convergence. I'll check out the other links above next week when I get back from out of town, and will get this thing up on the main site.
