Correct - the BG808s is very similar to the Zenith 1200 since the Zenith 1200 is a Cine 8 with LC lenses.
IMHO, this DVD is made for the Sony 1292 but a lot of the concepts are valid for all CRT projectors, the Zenith 1200 or BG808s being no exception. You'll have to skip some of the exact 'how to' steps as the buttons are different on other projectors, but the concepts are all the same.

It's 4 gigs in size and setting up for pay digital downloads is a bunch of extra work....

Hi Kal,
Well on *your* recomendations i've bought in
I'll post back views when i get it and watch it....I'd guess i'd rank myself as a reasonably well read amature. I've had a Bd800, Bg801s, Bg808 and now my BG808s...All DIY set-ups and generaly very watchable, but it would be nice to see a 'pro' at work.
It will be interesting to see how Sony do things in respect to Barco.
Ta,
Lee

Good stuff! If nothing else, it's entertaining to watch. I didn't go back and redo anything on my setup... but still enjoyed watching Graham work!

After a bit of a problem with duplication I have it ironed out.
I am up to date as of today,
All disks are posted.

Hi There,
Well mine just dropped on my mat. Nice and fast shipping and at a reasonable $cost for UK customs
Its in a double disc thin-style plastic case, there are actualy two discs, ones the DVD, the second is a support disc (CD?) that has a few computer based freeware display patern programs and the service manuals for the Sony 1292 - A particularly nice touch especialy if these are refered to in the program...There is nothing worse that someone saying use a **** patern and then not having one, so thier inclusion is good. (Although i think i actualy have them and use them already is by the by).
Would be nice to have a cover in/on the case though, even a B&W name etc so you don't loose it amongst all the other DVD's (780+)
Will watch and report back.
Thanks,
Lee

Hi There,
Well after a few watching sesions, i have now finished the DVD
The test paterns included are not used, nor is a HTPC at all. To be honest everything is done via the 1292's internal paterns though it is fed by a 1080p scaler at one point as the internal paterns lock to the frequancy of the input.
The Astigmatism stuff is certainly useful and while my BG808s has 8" tubes versus the 9" on the 1292 they are both sony and as such look remarkably similar (from memory).
The 1292 menus and naming convensions are a little different - The barco is very guided and segmented, the 1292 apears to be almost direct access to everything. I need to look up what pincusion is in respects to the barco.
The biggest difference i found was convergance...maybe its the naming thing, but it seemed to include a lot of what i would call geometry - Convergance on the Barco being aligning red/blue to green, not measuring to the screen - I'm also used to either an overlaping cross hatch grid (grid) or a touching plus grid (external) for setting this up.
The way the sony does lens flapping is different with rotating rings, i like the fact they are numbered, versus the Graphics direct screws - I guess the wide line defocusing method is probably transferable and at one point i had wondered if you could do something by defocusing - I always find it a pain with a top left/bottom right compair which is sharper method.
The idea of focusing for sharpness (and thus ignoring lens flapping errors)for an area of electronic astig is also a blindingly obvious but hadn't thought of it idea too.
Certainly a worthwhile purchase, though i'd like to see one for a Barco, heck i'm sure a whole series and a 'delux' box set could be done
Thanks,
Lee

Good review. Thanks Lee
The one major alignment difference with the barco is that if I remember correctly. The EM focus pack can be slid along the tube neck.
You set the EM focus to the centre position electronically, then slide the focus pack along the tube for best focus.
You then have a full range of adjustment forward and back electronically.

I am very new to CRT projectors, and I am in the process of building a dedicated theater room. I had a VPH-1271 given to me about a month ago. I read the manuals and fiddled with the projector to get comfortable with it, but I was still very unclear on exactly what I was doing.
I purchased the DVD, and received it a couple weeks ago. I will have to say that this DVD is a MUST for anyone who is new to CRT’s, I have watched it twice now, and certain chapters even more. The DVD is very in depth and covers the 1292 inside out! I was very impressed with Graham’s installation technique.
I think the best part of the DVD is when Mathew decides to bring out his laser level to aid in the geometry adjustments, because I thought that Graham was going to throw it into the screen!
The only problem with the DVD is after watching how nice it was to have lens angle adjustments, flapping adjustments, and EM focus, I went out and bought a G70, and I have never even watched the 1271 yet!
Oh yeah, Unless it is on fire, it is a flashlight, not a Torch

While I sure wouldn't mind a Barco specific version.. That contained a ton of great information..
It was nice to actually watch somebody that knows what they are doing go through all of the steps I have read so much about...
Great information.. Thank you for the Great Product.
(BTW. neither of my older cheap DVD players wanted anything to do with the Dvd's.. The PC ran it perfectly though...)

Graham,
Do you do any board level upgrades to the 1292? Simple soldering tasks such as replacing caps, transistors, etc. I am curious if there is anything, other than what is on the DVD, that you do to upgrade your 1292.

Hi,
I purchsed this dvd via paypal on the 01/07/07 but I have not received it nor have I had a confirmation that it has been sent.
I have sent two emails to date asking for its status.
Can you please confirm that you received my payment and if my item has shipped?
Thanks,
Brenton Spear
