So I'm used to a 10PG and I was real happy with the results I got out of it. Now I'm setting up a G90 and wondering what I should shoot for. I ran the 10PG at 1440X960@48Hz and the image looked brilliant. I picked those numbers because, 960 was double DVD's 480 and at 48Hz I noticed no flicker and felt it was easier on the PJ. That is, less stressful on the electronics and made it easier to draw a sharper dot.

So far I have messed with 1080 @ 60Hz and 720 @ 60Hz on this G90. At 1080, I only watched one concert video, so no real test there, being concert videos are not know for being well defined. I took a look at 720 last night and right away I spotted scan lines, so that crosses that one off the list. I think I will give 1440X960@48Hz next. The only thing is, I tried a 48Hz signal at 1080 and the PJ did not like that, never tried to get it to lock onto the signal, I just went right to 60Hz.

I guess the most important question is what is your main source: DVD, BR... ?
Also what is your scaler's capabilities?

I'm running 1080/24 out of an Oppo 105D into a Lumagen XE+ which scales the image to 1080/72. The image is noticeably smoother than the 1080/60 I was running prior to installing the lumagen.

I run all DVD's, that is why on my 10PG setup I was doing 960P, double DVD resolution. HTPC.

What is the Lumagen XE+?

Standalone video processor. The (+) indicates the units processors can resolve 1080/72Hz. A significant proportion will only do 1080/60 but the + have been checked and are certified to run the higher bandwidth. Paid $500 to have Lumagen upgrade from standard XE

Since all you have is DVD, then 960P makes the most sense, I'd either use 60Hz or 90Hz, this matches the best to the input framerate.

Why the higher refresh rate? I always figured if you cannot see it flickering then the refresh rate was high enough.

Try changing frequency on your PC monitor and see how the pic changes as it increases.

Well I tried 1440X960 and I still see noticeable scan lines from my seat. So that rules out that resolution. I never had a problem with seeing scan lines on my 10PG at 1440X960. So that means the G90 is sharper then the 10PG and I worked on the 10PG's resolution for quite a while, getting it the best I could. I not sure if that translates into a sharper DVD image, because I'm not seeing that yet.

Next I will try a HD resolution 1080, to minimize seeing scan lines.

1080P/60Hz should be your baseline resolution. 72Hz significantly improves it. The G90 has got the bandwidth so no reason not to go to 1060/60.

But as he uses DVD as a source material, netiher 1080P nor 72Hz makes any sense for him.
