The G90 has been a rock solid performed during my 12 years of ownership, ignoring the YA board meltdown. I was watching a movie 2 nights ago and about 2 hours in the convergence on blue shifted suddenly. I didn't lose convergence back to default, just shifted 1/2 inch up and to the right. I was able to bring it back to convergence with the blue cross test pattern in service menu.
I watched a 2 hour movie last night and didn't have any problems.

Any ideas which component might have caused this effect? Does it suggest a failing component. My Dallas chip is 9 years old. Could this be a sign of a failing chip?

Have never seen that before. if the convergence output was failing, you'd get a loss of H or V convergence with bent lines instead of straight ones just like the G70s often did, so that's not it. AS gjaky says, I'd flip the H yoke switches a few times along with the vertical one to clean them (with the set off!)

Maybe do change the Dallas chip, it's due as well just to be safe.

I've seen this with vertical deflection board issues. You should probably send your DF board to me for repair (Curt told me he's not doing G90 repairs anymore). It's a pretty simple rebuild and is not expensive.

I'm still doing repairs, just no G90 sales. I do have one g90 test chassis here.

But, either send to Craig or myself, we both know the fix.
Cheers!

The problem hasn't resurfaced yet. If it does I'll send the card in for repair (I have spare in my parts mule I could scavenge but if its a cheap fix I'll get the problem one repaired). My Dallas chip is also getting on so may as well have that copied to my new chip that I've had sitting around at the same time.

Two problems.

First, you don't want to play with a deflection board problem and wait for it to resurface. If deflection collapses you will burn your tubes.

Second, if you swap for a different deflection board, all your geometry will need to be redone. You really want to keep your original board in place.

Best,
craigr

That did cross my mind as I was typing. Thanks for confirming the suspicion.

So the repairs you do won't impact geometry?

Nope, all the geometry will remain almost exactly the same if you use the same board. You will have to do a minor convergence touch-up, but you have to do that any time you open the case anyway. The board is easy to identify, it's the only one with wires coming out the top with plugs for the RGB yokes.
