I'm not sure there ever was a war, so to speak. Like Kal said - it's whatever the movie maker wants. If it were me though, I would do all of my stuff in 1.78 unless I was absolutely-positively convinced we needed another ratio. 1.78 is what virtually all home screens are these days and I have no problems making concessions for the masses. But that's me.
