|
|
Guys
The NeXtage processor from Analog Way is an elegant and powerful centerpiece for an edge-blended CRT system on screens from nine to twelve feet wide.

We shall step through the connection and setup over the next three days.
NeXtage has built-in Remote Control Software (RCS). Connection to a laptop by Ethernet cable gives access to the necessary adjustments. NeXtage appears on the laptop like a website viewed on a browser.
The rear panel has a galaxy of inputs and outputs, controllable through the RCS. For our purposes, we are inputting from a Moome MUX HDMI switcher into a DVD-D port on Input One. The MUX handles four sources, our system today uses three. RGBHV outputs to both projectors are available on DVI connectors; we used a pair of Extron DVI-A to BNC female adapter cables, and finished the runs with Canare coax bundles.

First, one sets an appropriate IP Address by buttons and a knob on the NeXtage front panel.

The RCS allows us to step through the needed settings. It first asks us to select an output vertical (frame) rate; we elected 60 hz as our projectors are already dialed in for that.

Yup
Tinypic blew up, and my pics are too big to load here. I'll try again later today.

I use photobucket. Lots of room even if you limit to a "free" account.

Okay
To enable edge-blending in the NeXtage, we must configure the scalers in what is called a screen build.
My screen build is Number of Screens 1, GRID, Size 2x1, FIT, Preset Toggle.

With this entered, I can check the Blending page; where the needed controls are now active:

Satisfied that my Screen Build is nominal, I then can proceed to the Outputs page, and configure my signals to each projector. I am starting at 1280 x 1024 with 60hz already selected. My DVX uses those settings.

After some viewing I decided to advance the Contrast to 40 for a hotter signal.

That was for Output 1; the same settings must also be entered for Output 2.
I'll get back into this over the weekend.

This makes the geek in me drool. I'll never be able to afford such things. Oh well.

Guys
I am currently trying to learn more about this system and the many adjustments it offers. This will involve some phone calls, some trial and error, and some pictures to explain how things work. Bear with me.

Get Craig down there so you can figure out how to dial in the blend zone
Have yet to see a blended image that doesn't have grayscale issues in the blend zone. Curious as to whether this unit can provide enough finite control over image parameters to make the blend zone disappear.

Say JB
Craig was invited three weeks ago but had other commitments.
As you can see, we did the best we could:

And which blend zone were you referring to? LOL

Ok
While I get the rest of the setup sequence organized, here are a few screen shots
My NeXtage loaner ships out in a day or two so I have to get this thing finished.

I've seen pics of two CRT blends recently. On this one, the blend zone is really so close to invisible that I really can't see it. The other one honestly isn't even close to as well blended as this.
Very classy. And very expensive.

Guys
Kal is right---I misplaced my Joe Kane test pattern disc and had to guess on v height.
The NeXtage ships out in the morning so unable to reshoot those screen shots; but you get the idea---the system is awesome.
Anyone interested in the brochure for NeXtage can pm me with their address.

You mean they didn't give you a free sample at Analogway?

Tell them they really need to send you a demo/development example on long term loan.

Guys
I did find an hour this morning to redo some screenshots. The room has some light leaking in but the aspect is now correct! LOL
I'll get those new pics up tonight or tomorrow.

Okay Kal! LOL
I solved the height issue---just me needing to spend more time learning the many adjustments in the NeXtage.
The rest of these are for fun. The unit shipped out two hours ago and I cannot finish the setup procedure sequencing here,
Anyone who thinks running part of the phosphor on three or six tubes outperforms running All the phosphor on six tubes just doesn't get it.....

I do wish that there had never been an aspect ratio format war of any kind. We should have STARTED with something wider than 4:3 and stuck with it and made tubes in that shape and never, ever have had to deal with mapping a different aspect ratio into a fixed tube design. so we can always maximize phosphor usage and get all the benefits of that.
