I think it is fair to note that all electronics will reach the point at which something will start to fail.
Most CRT projectors have reached that age where you can expect their reliability to be dropping.
But to be fair about it, most CRT projectors should be pretty close to trouble free for at least the first ten years
after they're built, which is longer than the expected life of MOST forms of consumer electronics.
I would encourage a G70 buyer to acquire a second unit for spare parts. I'd encourage any CRT projector owner to do the same. |
Sorry to bump the thread after almost four months, but I wanted to comment on this.
You would think that to have two units would be a good bet for spare parts but you'd be wrong. The G70 unofficially has two versions for certain boards, and so it's not enough to get two sets but two sets that are of the same revision. I think that you have to check the serial number or something, but in my case I had two different G70s with different revisions of boards that were not interswappable.
Here's an incomplete list of incompatible boards:
- C Blocks - you need to have all of one or the other at the minimum. Some sets, like my older revision will ONLY work with the older style C Blocks (neckboards)
- PA Board is calibrated to set. Sometimes you'll get lucky and you can swap in a board from the same revision G70 in and have it work but it's no guarantee
- E Board - also calibrated to the set.
- V Board - if you have two different sets with different V boards then that spare V Board may as well not exist. They are not compatible
You cannot operate the set sans any of these boards. So no, it's not enough to just have two G70's. You have to make sure you have to MATCHING G70's. And unlike Barco, which has different naming designations for their different revisions (see the 1209 for example), all G70's, no matter their revisions, are simply "G70"'s. My two cents.

I did not try the standard but i like the look of HD-135 and they sure can give a good focus of the phosphor.

Yes, yes we do like those lenses. If you got a set of HD-18 lenses and c-elements you'd want to sell, let me know I am looking for a second set right now!
