It started with a Barco Data that I pulled out of a porno theater that went with a Barco Data 801s and a $4000 line doubler by Inline back in the day. We did the installation for the BArco dealer in town that didn't really want to get involved with installs. That was about 1990. I'd installed literally 100s of Zenith projectors by then, but that was the first projector I owned. The tubes were shot, the pix was terrible, but it was mine!.
I upgraded to an Ampro 1500, analog convergence, and I sprung for a new blue tube from Sony, which I think was $600 at the time. The Spellman HVPS overheated all the time, so I took off the cover and strapped a fan to it. Hokey, but it worked. I had that Ampro for a long time.
I then ended up with an NEC PG set out of a bar that was installed way too far back, so the tubes were toast. I bought two tubes from NEC at $700 each, and was wowed by that image compared to the Zeniths that I'd put in over the years. When DVDO came out with their line doubler, I bought one of those for $1000. Sold that system eventually, and got into selling sets on eBay in 1999. The rest is history. |
Porno theater?!? OK someone needs to explain this to me. Lived in really conservative and Christian communities my whole life. I am envisioning a movie house showing smut. Am I right? And I remember you showing pictures of an 8500 at one time.

Yup, that's exactly what it is. Ditto for strip bars. I did dozens of them back in the day. THe deal with the porno theaters was that in the late 80s to early 90s, the producers switched from film to video as it was far cheaper to edit and make videos than film, so the theaters switched to video projection as well.
Out of the 4 theaters, only one refused to switch over to video due to the costs, and regardless of smut or not, envision a theater showing the same reels of film 100s, if not 1000s of times 20 years after the film was discontinued, never mind that 35mm projector maintenance was something the cheap owners never did. The film was all scratched, etc. It was awful.
Funny thing about the 3 theaters that did switch, they ran their projectors 14 hours a day, 365 days a year. Needless to say that the tubes lasted 2-3 years, and each theater reported a 20% increase in business as soon as I retubed their set. Good times. They all paid their bills except for one, where I repoed the projectors.

Mine was a Barco Data 500. It came out of my old high school's drama theater. The drama department would sell tickets for 3 bucks a pop on a Friday's in the afternoon to go watch a movie played form a VHS. As long as you had a passing GPA, you were allowed to skip class for it. Anyways I ended up with it in 95 after they put in a NEC unit which was just gorgeous. I brought the Barco home and had a little fun with it until my father came into the bedroom and said no way boy.....you sell it for college money. I did get 5 grand for it as it only had like 400 hours on it. Then later I have a NECXG non LC that I got instead of a paycheck as the company went out of business. I loved that thing to death....but got married and wife said was too big for studio loft apartment. She said when I got her a house I could have one again. Sold it in 2000 for 3 grand. 2006 I finally got a NEC. (RUNCO 933). Color filtered lenses and all with only 1600 hours on it. I foolishly took it down for a 1208s2. The punch the Runco had was just plain superb. I had that thing so dialed in that some DVD's looked like the movie was in realtime on a set. I should have kept the thing. But I eventually tossed all in favor of a VV1. Got it from some angry lady her ex owned. Mike Parker is modding some stuff for me regarding it. Even sent him both Moome cards. Looking forward to getting the man cave back together...which reminds me....I might as well get one of the red c elements I snagged last year installed in the Projector. I am a believer in spares like that you never know.

LOL....So how did that work? you just say "hey you porno freaks owe me money....pay up or I remove your video porn from your business?".....sorry could not resist.....I think its too funny. Bunch of dirty bastards you Canadians.

Hey, all the movies originally came out of San Francisco, via the Mitchell Brothers. There was an interesting pocketbook that I read once about their lives, called XXX. A fascinating read.
The place had paid 50% up front, but never paid the final 50%. I went to call on the owner, who told me he was shutting down anyway, to come and get them. THe last sets I put in were a pair of BArco 808. I pulled them down (they were 12' in the air, no worries about cleaning them), and sold them to some touring video artist.

Mitsubishi hc7000,hc5
Optima H78,79,hd8200

Bucket list Cine9 and 4K DLP

OK, what EXACTLY is a 9518LC as compared to a regular 9500LC Ultra?
I asked VDC's top technical guy this question and he did not have the answer for that!

I bought my first CRT in 2001 and went through a string of them playing around until I got my G70, then enjoyed it for a number of years. I switched to JVC D-ILA in 2013 and enjoyed that for a couple of years until I sold my house and theater. I have an older JVC now for portable weekend duty while I'm planning and building my new theater.
- Sony 1271
- Sony 1252
- Sony 1272
- Sony G70
- JVC DLA-RS45
- Sanyo PLV-Z3
- Epson 5010
- JVC DLA-HD1

Interesting that nobody apparently (except for Curt) has so far said he's had all three top guns: Marquee 9500LC (Ultra preferred), Sony G90, Barco 909/Cine 9.
A 909/Cine 9 is on my wish list. I do want to be able to compare all three side by side.
I just scored a deal on a nearly unused AmPro 4600HD. But I only want the tubes out of it.

No! Just remember to say a little prayer to the CRT gods when you tear its eyes out.

I have had the 9500lc Ultra.
I had a brand new Barco Cine 9.
I have had many 909's.
And finally last year I had a very nice Sony G90 with LUGs and the correct colored c-elements. It was very nice. But to me it is very clear that crt is in the past(even the clearly distant past).
I think that even digital ht projectors will be a curiosity in a few years. Due to increase in size of common flat screens.

I had my hands on a 909 in a VR installation way back in the day - not long before 9/11. I also had my hands on Christie 9500's. I never touched a G90, but watched them at Art's and Cliffy's houses, and saw them other places.
I always wanted a BR909. That was the holy grail for me. That thing was amazing. 200-plus pounds of amazingness. Getting ahold of one of those big black or blue beasts would have been a triumph. Alas, the price never dropped far enough that I was comfortable with spending the money. In a classic twist of fate, they got more accessible, and I could have bought one, but I didn't/don't want one. C'est la vie.

You had that G90 rocking and I agree that the G90 comes close but it is not a 9500LC that is clearly better
than all current digitals. With that being said I will be moving on to 4K DLP and keep the crt for movies only.
I appreciate as well the attributes of digital in many ways makes it easy to own and enjoy and leave crt behind.
