Get a OPPO player Mike. It will make your mods stand out even more.

I'm going to borrow one to check things out and see if and how much of a difference I would see.

Right now I'm using a $129.00 four-year-old Panasonic, and I'm amazed for that price. Thanks

A few more shots...and I'm back to my lowly $39.00 Blu-Ray player

And maybe I should be adding a line like this from now on:

My Projector has not been setup or properly calibrated. ONLY last week I replaced the glycol in my Green CRT, with ONLY a Touch-Up focus and convergence being done to the Green CRT since then. The left side of my screen, much like everything pertaining to better focus has yet to be dialed in properly. And the glycol in my Red and Green CRT's also needs replacement and that will also happen when I swap out the Green CRT and that is when I'll dial everything in.

Plus, these shots are nowhere near what it looks like on my screen. The camera (10mp) I'm using cannot capture the natural resolution (I'll need a least a 14mp), nor am I able to re-post the shots in the captured resolution, because they are re-sized in the process.

Looks fantastic Mike! Are all 3 tubes LUG in the last photos?

No, the Green LCP is still in there and its really a problem for me in comparison.

If you look at any of the pictures you'll be able to see where the Green bleeds or splatters to some degree. The Red/Blue are true to their technical specs, in how well the track and maintain that dot size when being driven the way I'm driving these tubes. They really are very different when matched to the neck boards, so much so that when I bring up certain test patterns, it becomes obvious when looking at all three of them at once.

Oh, and the neck boards being used here are for LUG's only!

I'm presently contemplating a few things...

Getting an Oppo is definitely on my To-Do list and I'm thinking sooner, but in the meantime, I want to see what magic I can make happen with an over the counter Blu-Ray opposed to having something truly first class as a source.

The most impressive immediate improvement I noticed with the Oppo 83 was color rendition. I had a Sony 550, a Panasonic 30 and a Playstation 3 at the time. The Oppo produced extremely natural colors compared to all 3 other players. Also, the Source Direct option lets you output the video signal at the resolution of the recording with no processing at all. I use that and let the Lumagen do all the processing.

napos,

How are your results using MadVR for playback? What GPU are you using in the HTPC?

I am using a Radeon R7 240 2GB card. Processor is i5 3.4GHz with 8GB ram. Runs really smooth with no issues. You really have to be careful with some of the settings, because they can really mess everything up.

Do you consider the HTPC color fidelity to be equal to the Oppo? I've been using MadVr since the first iteration and really have not had many problems. The latest release has made it easier on older GPU's and my RX480 can handle quite a bit of processing. Also wondering if you calibrated your PC desktop and MadVr for the correct color output.

Assuming HDMI, doesn't the original digital data from the disc come out of the player? Seems like your Lumagen would have a much bigger impact on color than the BD player.

I think the color fidelity is the same. I have not used the calibration option of MadVR. I have just set the expected output level of the device (Marquee 9500) at PC levels. MadVR will not output correct Video levels (16-235). I let the Radeon make the conversion to video level by outputting HDMI 4:2:2. It is also very important that you disable color management on the renderer settings of MPC, before you select MadVR. If you don't, it will crush black level detail.

All the players I used went through the Lumagen. I immediately noticed a difference, when I plugged in the Oppo.

We're back this time with a batch from Baraka. It is the Netflix version, so it's the best I can do right now with Baraka, and for anyone with experience with the Netflix Blu-Ray disk, they are definitely lower image quality.

The setup is the same with me making changes to the video chain, but can't remember the last time I've touched up convergence or focus. And still using the $129.00 Blu-Ray

The neck boards being used here are a LUG Specific Set. They are uniquely tuned for LUG tubes, and with me having an LCP for the Green in this projector. The SMPTE even shows the difference. And do note that everything in RED is crisp and razor sharp, whereas anything in GREEN or Green dependant is blooming..

Oh, and before I forget, I've made a lot of changes over the past four months. Mainly because the Test Gig that was giving to me that allowed me to use my Test Marquee to really look at things on the scope. I'm winding down now because I plan to spend more time next year watching movies and less time with video chains. All I need now is a better camera because the one I have now will only do a 3mp capture, when the camera I had before it died, it would spit out 5 to 6mp shots.

Anyway, I post them as they come out the camera, with only deleting some that did not come out well for whatever reason...
