The status as of this moment is no confirmed deal due to no assurance I can hand pick the CRTs or reject any that were picked by on-site personnel.
There will be no deal if I do not received such guarantees. This is to ensure we all get quality product. |
Holy sh*t! Well this has certainly taken a turn for the worst. I hope it recovers. But honestly, there is probably a reason they're not letting you look at the tubes before purchase...

Frankly I would say that even the shadiest used car dealer would have to allow you to inspect a used car before you pay for it. It's a basic matter of business ethics.
If they won't allow me to inspect before I buy, then I'm not going to hand them something around 10,000 dollars.
I won't hand them even 10 dollars if I can't inspect before buying.
Ethics are very important. To me they are, anyway.

At this time I have no expectation of this deal moving forward.
Without a guarantee that I can inspect and reject tubes according to my standards, I will not risk it.
Nor would I expect that any of you would wish for me to do so or be willing to accept such poor terms yourself.
In the interests of full disclosure, here were the specifics I hadn't revealed previously:
Source of tubes: VDC's CRT recycling facility in Tucker, Georgia. I got wind of that being the place where tubes
were sent from L3 Communications and other simulation support companies as well.
I had negotiated for a per-tube price of 125 dollars each, allowing me to make 75 dollars each, which would have
been adequate to make it worth my time, my effort, my gas, my transportation costs, and allow me to be able to buy
a few extra tubes to cover for any that might be received that look good but test as having a problem.
VDC, I question your ethics.

That's to bad CM seems like a waste to not be able to find those tubes a new home

Has nothing to do with ethics. You're probably dealing with a recycling facility who likely has tens of thousands of tons of goods they're recycling, no different than government liquidation buildings. People can buy/bid on gov liq lots but nobody's allow to cherry pick there either. It's just not the way they operate given the volume.

Save yourself some hassles in the future and make sure the terms between yourself and the seller/manufacturer are clear before you go public. You would have saved you a lot of time. (My 2 cents from years with dealing with special buys/manufacturers/dealers/etc). The trick is to not assume anything when you're considering going into a deal like this.
The other option is to ask them at what price (if any) would they allow you to cherry pick. It's all driven by money. There may be a price at which they'll bend the rules. You never know.

Well, I HAD to go public with this in order to ensure there was enough interest to pursue it.
Today isn't the year 2001, where it would have been EASY to sell good tubes and for very much higher prices.
No way was I going to pay money to buy a stock of tubes when I didn't know if I could sell them for enough to break even at least.
It took two months to get enough interest to TRY to move forward. And as things progressed, it got worse. Verbal assurances that I could hand pick the tubes mutated into a written prohibition against even being able to inspect tubes that THEY would have picked out for me according to my specs.

That sucks. Sounds like you had already contacted them and agreed to terms first then ... unfortunate that things got changed on you!

They throw away no tubes. Every tube gets recycled, either to make rebuilt tubes or just become recycled glass.
They CLAIM that they don't usually sell used tubes, but I think that's probably not true. It's just not an advertised item.

I was joking...... partially.
My mother lives ten minutes from the Tucker location. I am going up to Atlanta sometime in the near future. It would cost me next to nothing to drop by.

I think you should! Maybe YOU can help drag this oxcart out of the ditch!
In fact, if you want, I'll hand the whole deal over to you if you can pull it off. All I ask out of it is that you give me something for my efforts. Call it a single set of tubes, maybe. Or if you can score one, a single red C element would be enough. I need ONE more than I have now, to complete the upgrade on projector no. 6 when I get around to it.

I can look into it, but this would be at the bottom of my list of things to do. If Curt or Craig wanted to drive down, then I could put the tubes in the garage.

No, he's on every day, posting.
I think you're waiting on a set of tubes you purchased from him unrelated to this group buy? (You posted back on June 6th in this thread that you're waiting on a set of tubes from him).
You may want to start a new thread or contact him separately as your transaction with him on these tubes is unrelated to this BUY thread he was putting together (which now doesn't seem will happen).
Posting here about tubes he owes you is just confusing the issue and likely making others think this group buy is still going to happen or has happened.
@Chris: It sounds like modelaratrod has been waiting on a set of tubes from you for at least 7 weeks now. Please provide him a status update. Thank you.

That's something different entirely. A trade has been agreed upon for some existing stock.
The problem is that due to the failure of this deal I'm so short on money I can't afford to ship boxes to him yet!

Did he not already pay you for these tubes, including any shipping/packaging costs?
Regardless, if you can't ship after the 7+ weeks he's been waiting you should refund him then and be done. You should at least have let him know... he's been asking publically here, more than once.
