|
|
Hey all, just got my first projector and figured I'd join up after lurking for so long. Sorry if this thread's already been made (feel free to just point me to the right place!) but I didn't come across anything in a quick search.
I currently live in an apartment and there's absolutely no room for a CRT projector, but I saw a deal I couldn't pass up on Craigslist. So now I've got this greatly-kept unit (an NEC XG-852, if anyone's interested) but nowhere to set it up and use it for the time being. I'm looking to move within a year. So I figure I'll build a table of sorts for it to sit on when I do intend to use it, and I'll put that in a closet to keep it stored away.
Is there anything that should be done to preserve or otherwise safeguard the projector before it sits for so long? Is it bad to have it sit that long?
Thanks

Hello
Bag it in plastic, park it on the floor and forget about it until you move.

I'm with Tim on this, but I'm going to add one suggestion.
Go to your Pharmacy and buy a 100g or so of SILICA GEL - the stuff you get in boxes of shoes when they're new. Chuck that into a pillow slip/case, sew it shut, and put that INTO THE PLASTIC BAG BEFORE YOU SEAL IT.
It will absorb any moisture in the bag and keep it dry.
I have a M8500 that I kept in a storage shed for 5 years inside a supposedly airtight custom road case and the small amount of moisture trapped within caused almost irrepairable damage.
All my X-Ray shields were useless and the ground straps around the tube bells were completely corroded. I had to replace the carbon film layer and the ground straps which took research and a heap of time.
Will post a pic if I can.
That's my two cents worth anyway.
Cheers
Ben

Power it up and let it idle for a couple hours then shut it down. No signal necessary. This will warm up the capacitors
Then bag it up with the silica gell pack.

XG852, that was my first projector! It's capable of really stunning images. Hopefully nobody messed with "The Pots That Must Not Be Touched" inside, because if they did, it's just about impossible to tune up a decent picture. It takes an oscilloscope and a lot of knowledge to re-calibrate it. Unfortunately mine WAS messed with, and while it threw a great picture I just wasn't satisfied, so I sold it to Curt. That was about 4 projectors ago.

Definitely a good idea, thanks. I've used the stuff before to pack away some PC's in a storage unit, works great.

Alright. Currently the lens assemblies are off the main unit (P/O had removed them for transport when they moved or something), should I worry about getting them back on, or does it not matter to just warm it up?

Good to know. I'm looking forward to being able to make full use of it...

Right-O
Here it is, moisture damage in a road case
The first picture is the bottom of the tube and the 2 circles are where the ground leads attach and run back to the VNB. The second picture is the side of the tube - obviously the white powder is meant to me grey metal.
Awesome.
Hope it helps
