possibility of damaging something i presume?
i removed the powercord and unplugged everything.

The +40v line looks ok but the -20v line is shorted. So start removing or disconnecting boards, starting where ever you saw smoke and test that -20v line upon each removal until that 0 reading comes up.

I presume without turning the projector on right? Just with ac connected and the switch on the back in the on position?
I'll flip the switch whenever I take a board out

i removed the rgb board , this resulted in a reading of .454 with AC connected but projector not powered up.

Took out the rgb board.
A resistor seems to have been replaced.
Shoddy work.

Let me say this one more time. Remove that power cord from that projector and put it off to the side. I am not going to be responsible for your death, UNDERSTAND?

Allright, I am sorry. I appreciate your concern, won't be so stupid.
Everything is powered off and disconnected, I get .433 without the rgb card in its slot, and I get 0 if I plug it back in its slot
All is done WITHOUT POWERCORD 
See previous post, I went a little further and measured the ic.
It appears to short at several pins. Is this how it's supposed to behave? Because the same ic is at the left side of the board and thus one doesn't behave like that.

Forget that ic. That thing you call a resistor is really a transistor, a regulator to be specific. I need you to test it with your DMM on diode scale. Just test across different legs and give me the readings.
You do know NO POWER for diode and resistance testing, correct?

Tried to test the regulator
It came off the board.
Tested it anyway.

Leave that regulator out and put the board back in the projector and see if you still show a short.

Take the board back out. Verify that regulator id on the board is ic20, which it should be. If it is, then locate C84 in that board. Should be right near that reg.. Do a diode test across it and give me the readings.

Cleaned the pads, no bridge. Still a short. I'll do the diode test tomorrow. Thanks so far everyone.

diode reads 0, and in continuity mode the meter goes "beep" so its a short
|

You verified it is ic20 that is removed? And you are testing on capacitor C84?

yes, i removed ic20. (the one that came off the board) and i verified that the cap i tested is c84. it reads: "0"
