Ok, remove C84 from the board and then test across the pads on the board.

'What does it do across the capacitor pads on the board? That is what mac is asking.
Check that for continuity as well as with the diode.

Yeah, he did not do what I asked but he jumped ahead and the short is now gone. But were not done yet.

As I noted above to nash, you do have some problems following instructions, LOL.
So I see the short is now gone but you do have to do a few more things on that board. So pull it back out.
Now locate C85, should be right there nearby also and do a diode test across it.

sorry, i sometimes confuse things as i am not a native english speaker.
However a continuity test (with the board out) gives me no beep on the pads. it just silently stays at "1"

Ok, 1 more thing to test. CR17 should be near there also. has 3 legs. Do diode test across various legs looking for a short.

Those numbers look fine. Should you should be done with testing. And the +40v line tested ok so now you can order parts.
So I have:
2) 75kohm, 2 watt resistors
1) 2.2uf Tant SRF mnt
1)LM320T-12
Whatever fuses are needed.
I would change that regulator even though it did not test shorted. Also, the 2 watt resistor may be a little tight in between those 2 caps but if the legs are long enough you can get them mounted ok.

thank god i have an SMD rework station with a hot air gun so i can mount surface modules.
ill have to see where i can order those parts. which regulator did you mean?

The one that you already have removed. You said it came out by itself.

You need a 320. Your link is for a 340. So no, that will not work.
The cap has enough voltage but you need to check the size to make sure it will fit on the board. You don't want one to big that you cannot solder in on correctly.
