Suddenly I'm getting an urge to buy an XA1 to use as an HTPC case!

If either of you guys pursue this, post a picture or two along the way!

If I do it, it's the kind of thing that I will have fun doing and then doing a write up for. If and when, I'll post about it with pics.

it'll be the new rage on E-bay, HTPCs in HD-DVD cases for that "vintage look" .

" yeah man, those crazy old farts and their giant DVD players".

I was an early adopter of HD-DVD so i have 30 or 40 discs...always felt it was superior to Blu-ray and was quite distressed when it lost the format war. Anyways, i have the HD-XA2 which I even if i dumped my HD discs would live on in my rack as it was rated as one of the best up-converting DVD player in the world with its REON chip. I'm always on the hunt for used HD-DVDs at local thrifts as well!

I have the Toshiba HD-XE1, and think that its quite a step down compared to the BLU RAY image on the OPPO 103D.

It looks soft, and more like upscaled SD. Also the DVD upscaling is better on the OPPO 103D

I cant find a way of turning off the upsampling to 4:4:4 12 bit.

I have around 90 movies, so it will stay.

I preferred HD-DVD initially too and really wanted it to win the war. I wasn't really a big Sony fan, and was annoyed with Sony proprietary formats over the years (MiniDisc, MemoryStick, ATRAC, etc.) so I really liked that HD-DVD was less encumbered by patents. Fewer patents meant HD-DVD was much cheaper and less restrictive for industry vendors to support. I also liked that HD-DVD authoring was much simpler, and playback required less powerful hardware.

When HD DVDs became available from Netflix, I started getting them and almost every disc that came in the mail had to be cleaned and polished before I could play the disc reliably. Something about the Tyvek envelopes and mailing them would put a very subtle burnished matte finish on the surface of the disc. If I didn't clean and polish the discs, they'd invariably skip or hang. Man, was that annoying. Major bummer. All my discs played perfectly, but the Netflix discs were a total pain.

But then Blu-ray started picking up steam, some studios announced exclusive support, and it looked like HD-DVD was slipping, so I held my nose and bought a PS3. Yeah, Blu-ray was really nice. Super-fast compared to the HD-DVD experience. I added some BDs to my Netflix queue and found out what one of the patents and costs of Blu-ray was going to: That beautiful, wonderful coating on the disc. Not a single skip or hang. Ever. If a disc had any fingerprints, they were easy to wipe off, and they never had any scratches or abrasions. For reliability, durability, and longevity, it quickly became clear that BD was far, far superior.

I almost wonder if some of the studios got wind of the returns and support inquiries between HD-DVD and Blu-ray at Netflix. No doubt HD-DVD was bad, bad news for Netflix as far as returns and support.

Keeping my XA1, but don't really miss HD-DVD at all. I do like that you can make a "mini HD-DVD" with a DVD-9 and simple authoring software, but with media playback devices and multi-terabyte drives, it's really not necessary anymore.

I was a huge supporter of HD-DVD over BD.

No doubt that upon release, HD-DVD image quality blew BD totally out of the water. Many of the BD's that first came out actually looked worse than DVD to my eye. HD-DVD started right out using VC1 codec, but BD would not use it because they called it a "beta" even though it had been widely used with PC's for more than two years. Well, putting VC1 against MPEG2 is no contest.

I really was shocked by the number of people that saw no image quality difference between HD-DVD and BD because HD-DVD was worlds ahead in that department. Some of the early BD's were a total joke for image quality.

But as time went on BD adopted more modern codecs and things got a lot better. A good BD now will easily look better than the best HD-DVD did back in the day.
