It's no joke, border security on the Canada side has gotten really serious about illegal work.
I work for a large international company designing and implementing control systems on production equipment. I've had two projects that have taken me to one of our Canadian plants, once to start up a new piece of equipment, and once to do a complete controls upgrade on another line. Even with the proper letters of invitation in place, signed statements by my employer that I am a US employee paid by the US, and will continue to be throughout and after the project's completion, there is always grief. I've only made it through the line once without being called inside for further interviewing, and I have coworkers who have been turned away, had tools confiscated, and spent hours being interviewed/interrogated at the border.
We're now advised to bring no tools, equipment, or even documentation/drawings with us. Only our laptops. We are now to say that our purpose is a series of advisory meetings to assist with the installation of new equipment in the plants, and that Canadians are to do all work on the lines which is mostly true, just a real round-about way of describing it so they don't see us as criminals.
And the worst part about all of this is at the end of the day, we are bringing more jobs into Canada by installing these machines, but we have to go through so much crap to get there. I could easily see how Craig could have trouble getting back in.
I watched that Border Security show while I was up there, it's absolutely ridiculous. Some of the cases really do show people trying to get in for shady reasons, but if you really look at the majority of cases, or at least in the episodes I watched, most are people who are eventually let in, but are subjected to hours of interviewing, calling home, checking bank account balances and confirming stories, before finally being let in. I dunno, from my viewpoint the shows just seemed to glorify the tough border security process, and incite almost a sense of distrust against foreigners trying to visit.
But I do also believe that it could be tough for some Canadians to get into the US as well, there were definitely services there advertising legal assistance to clear records and such to allow entry into the US.

Yeah, those of you worrying about the cold, get over it. Vancouver is right on the ocean and that moderates the temperatures. Look at the weather histories. Temps dipped just below freezing around Dec. 30 / Jan. 1, when most of North America was in the deep freeze. At that time Vancouver was actually warmer than Tucson, AZ !! Since then the highs have been in the 50's (10° C or higher) for most of the last 3 weeks.
That's strange that Canada gave you such grief, Craig. Did you forget to hide your AK47 in your suitcase?? I had a problem at Vancouver one time, with an overzealous immigration officer who didn't want to let me in, but even she finally relented. Since then I've brought a letter saying who I was and who was guaranteeing my income in, and my exit from, Canada, and I haven't had a bit of trouble. |
It started when an officer insisted that I was not allowed to setup a Lumagen inside Canada. Canada and the USA have an agreement that a specialist can work in the other country as long as the specialist isn't charging specifically for the work. In other words, as long as the Lumagen I sold (that had already been paid for and shipped) included free setup, than I should be allowed to set it up since the entire thing was paid for in the USA and then exported to Canada where the taxes were paid on the equipment when it was imported to Canada.
My wonderful boarder agent didn't understand this and sent me home after confiscating my tools and hardware and charging me $750 to release them. He also said, "I am going ot make it hell if you ever try to come into Canada again." He told the truth because the next time I tried to enter Canada by air I had NOTHING on me (hardware or tools) and they still insisted that I was simply trying to work illegally. That's when they sent me to jail for the night.
It was like entering a bizzaro world. I had a much easier time entering and exiting Cuba a few years ago. Not to mention how open and easy it is to travel all around the Euro zone. North America really has its head up its ass when it comes to immigration.

How long ago was that? |
Two or three months ago... losing track of time.
I thought about fighting it Mac, but honestly I am just over it. I think the only reason I will ever go back to Canada would be for the nuclear holocaust during WWIII. I would have liked to have driven the Corvette with my wife up to Alaska one Summer, but there are plenty of other nice trips to take.

It's really no different going to the US. The gov't does this to protect jobs in their own country. Difference seems to be that if you get caught trying to work in Canada, it's a 1 year ban. If you do it in the US, it's a 5 year ban.

A greek meal sounds ok eh, the best place to get a good well made Australian burger here is go to a Greek restaraunt.
Been meaning to ask Nash about the solar performance???

You must eat Tom's food. Just get whatever he suggests. It's been a while, but everything he's ever given me was just fantastic!

I'd be interested in a CRT meet at Curt's, though at present I don't have a passport.

I would definitely try to get up there. Right now, I only have Europe scheduled for early June and Cedia in Oct.
I am putting the other guys on notice. CIR, Rocco, Dr. Dog and Big Dog need to start planning some meets. Heck, Kurt is probably doing a meet in Texas right now.
Curt,
Are you still going to Texas and La? I am almost definitely out. I have gotten a lot of crap work that is going to take me awhile to complete. I may not make any money, but at least my guy makes something.

Nope, not going anywhere right now I'm afraid. If work goes as planned this spring and summer, I want to do a long road trip with Barb in late summer or early fall, probably as tourist season winds down. Not sure where exactly, but definitely the South. that last road trip 16 months ago was the best I've ever taken, and want to try and duplicate something similar.
As for my meet, it may be in 2016. This place needs massive renovations before I can open my doors to the public. I just wanted to get a feel for how many would show up, and right now I have a commitment in this thread of what, 1 person?

I could do another one. Maybe Spring would be a good time or early Summer. It would be best to avoid planning anything that involves Winter and Chicago at the same time
Last one I had was mostly to show off 3D. I'm not sure anyone even saw what 2D looks like on my G90 during that meet.

Oh Craig, Craig, Craig..... There was only four of us there. Jeff was there for a short time and Barb (or was it Curt) fell asleep. I think you showed some clips in 2D. Was the Moon movie in 3D or 2D?
I am obviously out the first two weeks of June. A late April or early May might be good. Also, an early fall meet might not be bad.
Curt,
That sounds good. Cedia is in Dallas around the middle of October. I may end up driving out there for the show. If fuel is still this cheap, then I could do the trip for the price of coffee.

Hey, I was the one that fell asleep. No one took a pic this time, unlike the first meet at Cliff's place, where the pix was (is) still plastered for all to see.

That wasn't a meet at all, it was just us hanging out.
I was referring to the meet that I had several years back when I launched the Lumagen 3D CRT release. And as I recall Eric, you weren't there... jerk

I don't remember being invited.
And don't start calling me names or I will reveal some of our private conversations. Such as when you told me the Barco 909 was the greatest CRT of all time with the best interior layout and easy to use menu. Of course, I would be remiss to not mention the virtually problem free electronics that are simple to diagnose and repair.

I would be there for sure
I would have to decide to take my car or my caddie(fuel better be cheap)
I will need to get a passport so I can get across the border
ROAD TRIP!!!!
I likely would take the caddie as my car is a classic and the caddies seats are so comfy(great for trips)

I'd say 80% chance I could make it during the summer months and 30% during school year...would love to come out and to visit Vancouver. My inlaws were there last year and loved it.
