.. in all seriousness, how many here would show up?

I know there's not the traffic flow that there used to be, but how many of you would come to Vancouver? Just want to know whether I should plan for one sometime in the next 18 months sometime. (will be plenty of notice)

Buncha wimps! Vancouver is just outside the 'igloo zone'. We save that for Toronto and Quebec. Smile

Weather in Aug/Sept/Oct is usually 65-80 degrees F, which is 20-30C.

I would consider going. However, Canada has turned me around and sent me home the last two times I tried to enter the country since the new policies have been implemented by your conservative xenophobic government. Once by land and once by air.

On land the line to get into Canada was 1.5 hours long and all the way across the bridge. Conversely, to get back into the USA after I was sent packing took five minutes and there were three cars in front of me. By air I was sent to a detention center overnight because there were no flights back to Chicago that evening after I arrived. First time I have ever spent the night in jail so thanks Canada.

If I do come, I certainly won't be much calibration help because there is no way I am bringing my tools across.

I thought the USA was paranoid, but Canada is on a whole different level or paranoia. Times have changed up north. I think you guys want to outdo the dickish immigration policies of the USA.

I would however love to be there.

NO question it's tougher in both directions. The US is as tough on Canadians as Canada is on USers.

In discussions a number of years ago with customs, they told me that a Canadian citizen cannot be denied entry back into Canada. So in other words, if an ax murderer is being chased by the US cops, and he runs to Canada Customs with the bloody ax still in hand, he HAS to be accepted into Canada. That's not saying that Customs won't detain him, but if he is a Canadian citizen, he cannot be refused entry.

I found that interesting. Not sure if the US has the same laws.

Not sure if you have the show available in the US, but there's Canadian, Australian and New Zealand versions of a show called 'Border Security'. It's reality TV, but there's no actors, it's really a documentary of the searches and stuff that customs finds. I find it fascinating. The only editing that's done is I find that people that get searched that seem to be guilty as hell are often found with no issues, and more than one person that I thought was innocent was found to be carrying drugs internally. Good editing, but they're not messing with reality, at least from what I've seen so far.

The border crossing that I always use has finally been shown on TV as well. Twice I saw the camera crew as they were packing up, but perhaps one day I'll be on the show. Very Happy Could make for interesting TV.. 'middle aged nerd spends thousands bringing junk electronics across the border.'

Not to mention that Vancouver really isn't a cold place in the winter. With the Pacific Ocean you guys really don't get much snow at all do you? Every time I have been up that way in winter it's been raining and sometimes even sunny.

Toronto is moderate most of the time. Quebec however....winter wonderland.

I've gone from Toronto at -5 c to Montreal at -14 and 4 feet of snow in the space of 5 hours.

It was something ridiculous like 55 degrees here yesterday. Short sleeve weather. Dipped almost to freezing overnight, but yeah, only 2 days of snow in the last 3 months, maybe 2" worth? Local mountains have zero snow, worst ski season in a long time..

Yeah the cars don't rust as badly in Vancouver. They don't use road salt there.

As for the projectors, where else in North America ( World wide?? ) can you see 400 CRT's in the same place? Very Happy ...and rust free too Laughing

Throw a meet the week of Feb. 9 and I'll be there!! Very Happy

Yeah, those of you worrying about the cold, get over it. Vancouver is right on the ocean and that moderates the temperatures. Look at the weather histories. Temps dipped just below freezing around Dec. 30 / Jan. 1, when most of North America was in the deep freeze. At that time Vancouver was actually warmer than Tucson, AZ !! Since then the highs have been in the 50's (10° C or higher) for most of the last 3 weeks.

That's strange that Canada gave you such grief, Craig. Did you forget to hide your AK47 in your suitcase?? Laughing I had a problem at Vancouver one time, with an overzealous immigration officer who didn't want to let me in, but even she finally relented. Since then I've brought a letter saying who I was and who was guaranteeing my income in, and my exit from, Canada, and I haven't had a bit of trouble.

It started when an officer insisted that I was not allowed to setup a Lumagen inside Canada. Canada and the USA have an agreement that a specialist can work in the other country as long as the specialist isn't charging specifically for the work. In other words, as long as the Lumagen I sold (that had already been paid for and shipped) included free setup, than I should be allowed to set it up since the entire thing was paid for in the USA and then exported to Canada where the taxes were paid on the equipment when it was imported to Canada.

My wonderful boarder agent didn't understand this and sent me home after confiscating my tools and hardware and charging me $750 to release them. He also said, "I am going ot make it hell if you ever try to come into Canada again." He told the truth because the next time I tried to enter Canada by air I had NOTHING on me (hardware or tools) and they still insisted that I was simply trying to work illegally. That's when they sent me to jail for the night.

It was like entering a bizzaro world. I had a much easier time entering and exiting Cuba a few years ago. Not to mention how open and easy it is to travel all around the Euro zone. North America really has its head up its ass when it comes to immigration.
