In the audiophile community, you might be able to argue (with considerable success) that looks are indeed everything. Practically all the top selling and top rated high end audio components are designed to have a dramatic, eye-catching appearance which gives the impression of massive construction and very high build quality. None of which guarantees better sound quality, of course....
Disclaimer: I myself am an audiophile as well as a videophile. My audio equipment is very good and the most prominent components of the system are in fact large, massively built, and of high build quality. Very good sounding, too, and yes, very expensive at their original price points. Not that I paid that price. I buy used. Always have, always will. I do not claim that the looks of my Krell power amps guarantee that they sound appreciably better or worse than a good receiver. But they do LOOK impressive.
