A while ago I did the SilenX fan mod posted here http://curtpalme.com/G90_fan_mod1.shtm and while it did a good job in noise reduction, the part of the fan mod for the PA board in the front of the projector resulted in an undetected stalled fan and subsequent failure of the PA board. So I later tried the mod that Craig Rounds of CIR Engineering developed which re-purposes one of the original SONY fans that the SilenX fans replaced in the rear of the pj. A big advantage to using the OEM SONY fan is that the stall detection is kept functional.
The noise reduction is accomplished by replacing the whiny small fan in the PA cavity with the much quieter and larger SONY fan. The large fan won't fit where the original PA fan was, so it needs to be mounted beneath the PA cavity. This works well if the projector is ceiling mounted. My version differs slightly from Craig's in that I keep the brackets under the PA board by shifting them outward from center using 3 rivets on one side of the bracket instead of the original 6.
The PA cavity with the board and fan removed looks like this..
<View from under the PA cavity>Drill out the 6 rivets from each bracket. Center the new fan and use a sharp tool to mark the hole to drill for the fan screws. Score an X from the fan mounting holes to find the center to drill a hole for the fan. Use a 4-1/4 bi-metal hole saw to make the fan hole.
Pop rivet the PA board brackets back in place using the outermost original holes. Use aluminum tape to close off the hole that was used by the original small fan. Mount the new fan using the screws used when the fan was mounted in the back.
The PA cavity should look like this.
