I have had a few pioneers with the same style speaker connectors where the red connector was pushed in slightly from someone hitting it against something else and inside the unit on the back side of that connector, then metal strip that goes down to the circuit board was bent and touching either the neg strip or the case metal. Check that.

I wish you had a headphone connector that you could connect it to your main speakers just to verify the HP signal was clean.

I was looking over the schematics some more and I want you to try something. Connect your speaker to the B channel RF and have it playing so you hear the low volume and distortion. Then just plug in your headphones. Nothing else. Sound should still be coming out of your B speaker. Did it change?

Ok, that took a while. There is an error in the schematic so I had to verify in another location. Does your receiver have a speaker select button to select A or B or A+B or just SP?

It has a button on the front panel and a separate red indicator, as well as the digital display that shows what is selected when you press the button. Speaker A, Speaker B, Speaked A & B, Speakers Off. It appears that inserting head phones switches the speakers off because it displays head phones inserted when they are plugged in, and the red light turns off.

Ok, that is what I am seeing also with the correct document page. So when you were connected to the B speakers, did you select B only with the button? And you had the low volume and noise?

Yes that is what happens. Speaker in A or B right channel will produce very low volume and I think the distortion comes from turning the volume up close to max, because it does not seem to be distorted when the volume know is at 50%. But the output is so low at 50% that it is difficult to hear any distortion. I think that turning the volume up is over driving the preamp.

I need you to try doing a master reset. Make sure you see "reset?", "OK?" and "ok".

If you do not have the user manual for your receiver, go here and download it: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Home/AV-Receivers/Pioneer+Receivers/VSX-821-K

Go to page 35 and go through the manual channel level procedure. Make sure the RF is not set low. It should be the same as the LF for now.

See if that helps. If not then I find it very odd that the HP sounds ok but the speaker outs do not.
I would then suggest the headphone plug test if you have a 1/4" stereo plug that you can add wire to and connect those wire to your speakers to see if you have normal sound that way. See image in link. The RCA plugs would be your speakers.

i have the owners manual but i do not have the remote for this receiver and it says on page 34 that you have to use the remote to change speaker levels, so it looks like i will be ordering another remote control.

Oh, that's right. This model does not have those buttons. Do you have an ipod, Iphone or ipad?
You can download software that will control the receiver.

Could try the headphone thing also if you have a plug to butcher up, lol.

i have an iphone 3gs and a samsung galaxy s5, and yes i will gladly butcher a headphone plug, i think i have some old 1/4 phone plugs that are on an old speaker cabinet that has a screw on cap that will allow for changing the wires.

I did not see your model receiver listed for this app but I guess you could try it anyways since it is free. But I also don't know if it can access the setup menu.

I have looked at several apps, apple and android and none list this model. The closest I have found is an app for the VSX-822. I have downloaded an app. The owners manual only says that an iPhone or Ipod can be connected to listen to music through the receiver, no thing about controlling any functions. I think the problem is that this receiver does not have a way to connect to a network. But I am going to try this app with the USB connection and see if that will work.

Well I could say we could try doing some more testing assuming that the adjustment is ok, because the master reset should of set those levels to default. But we could end up spending time chasing nothing if it is set to low. One thing that I have found working on a lot of pioneers it that most of the pioneer avr remotes will work on most all models. There may be some different buttons, or some not there, or some extras, but they usually work all the functions. So you could look for an avr remote that may not be specifically for your model. Just don't look at to old of ones, because i don't know for sure. If you do find one pretty cheap, and you can post a link or picture I could probably tell better.
