OK, so that we are all on the same page here these 3 pictures are if the GREEN faceplate focused at 10 electronically.
To the naked eye I can see quite clearly the whole line structure from top to bottom and both left and right, in fact you should be able to see it yourselves in the pics these pics were taken with both the luminance and black level (brightness) at minimum.
I have looked at this pattern through a magnifying glass also and it certainly appears quite sharp to me

Scanlines are easily seen and are sharp.

Well from both you comments it seems we are pretty much in agreement regarding the focus, and Casey, we have gone from ZERO (almost tight focus) call it -3 for crack on, so therefore as things stand and if the scale is linear then at present crack focus would actually be at +8, based on that it we could (with the focus ring cut off completely, the green should crack in at around 19

I can put a source into it, but as there is no geometry or convergence done I will just rely on the sharpness of the image
Will sort out some cables and get it hooked up and see what happens the, unless i hear to the contrary I will slice off the entire front thread back to the body of the focus coil, and see if that extra 7 mm or so takes us further.

Thanks again guys for your fabulous support and encouragement

Yes certainly test with your source, that is somewhat important.

I personally cant see any downside to the yoke mod, but id wait just for now, ive emailed Macgyver to seek his opinion.

Just would like to see how an external source affects focus as your set is just plain strange you never know it might have a positive effect.

On Green only focus on 7

input is running at 960p, so far the looks the sharpest out of the scaler,

The source material is a blu ray coming out of the player as component and scaled up through the Lumagen to 960p and leaving there as RGBHV

These pictures were taken about 2 foot from the screen
the cameras resolution is set to 1280 x 720

In my view it's better for the Lumagen to perform DAC rather than the BD player. So I would suggest HDMI out of your BD player at 1080p/24 through a Moome MUX-FHD into your Lumagen via the DVI input and then RGBVH out to the projector. In your case though either 720p (standard) or 1080i/96

I take it you are using a Lumagen Vision. Correct me if I am wrong.

Hi km987654

The scaler I have is the LUMAGEN PRO and unfortunately it is jut all BNC connectors
with composite/S-Video component and RGBHV inputs and RGBHV scaled outputs and a RGBHV pass through and thats it
I would like to get it all going eventually and make better use of the Blu Ray, but I have yet to get my head around how best to go about it, but I am sure IT WILL HAPPEN !!

Did the source have any affect of electronic focus?

Not that I could detect, but going from a crosshatch pattern to motion is not that easy, and of course it depends on the quality of the source material, I was running (not that it showed in the pics) GRAVITY mainly because I find it rather good in terms of fine detail and for the most part the shots are quite long and relatively slow moving
It's also hard to evaluate everything in GREEN, but I think we are going in the right direction, if your friend thinks cutting the front off the focus coil is the go, then so be it........how do you get the tubes out of the set? I know they need to come out to get the focus coil off the neck

Im not sure on an 8", Keith will know that. NECs are totally different, and the CineMAX they come out the top. Id expect the Cine 8 they come out the front.
