Yes I did, swapped the one out of the BG 808, result was exactly the same

With the focus wires disconnected the picture should focus in the middle. If not you have to move the coils some way.

Thanks for your reply redfox,
However this projector does not have SONY tubes, they are MEC therefore there are no focus wires, also as mentioned in previous posts, the way the tube assembly is set up there is no movement possible fore or aft as all the components are jammed up tight to each other (you can see this in earlier pictures)
Regards
Trevor

The wires to the focus yoke I mean. If all the yokes are jammed up than move them to the back Very Happy

If you really can not get static focussing right without the cable connected than probable the permanent magnets are off. That can happen to magnets that are big shocked as far as I know.

If you slide the focus coils back and forth on the tube does it change the focus in any way?

The Focus coils cannot be moved either forward or back there is NO clearance, It was suggested in an earlier post to reverse the neckboard mounting bracket, which I did but it only afforded me about 5mm of clearance, which actually did nothing to aid the focus at all.
All the components on the tube neck are ALL hard up to each other, I have compared the CINE 8 arrangement with the BG 808 which does not have the large heatsink attached to the tube neck, but rather the 808 has it's G2 adjustment board attached to the projector chassis which in turn gives plenty of room to move the focus coils backwards and forwards, I think a couple of the earlier photos in this post shows the difference between the 2 machines mounting arrangements

Put again all settings to midposition in the service menu. Everything will be at 49 with exception of dynamic astig. That should be always put manualy in the midposition, both axial and diagonal, in all zones and for all three colors. Try first with green only to see if it has influence on midfocus.
Normaly, dynamic astig is all about corners and zones focus but sometimes could affect the midfocus a bit if the magnetic fields of the focus yoke are not symetric.
By the way, this should be done even if you do not have a focus problem. Not putting dynamic astig manualy in the middle on installation will give some problems in twicking the best of geometry ang convergence too.

That shouldn't be a problem but I wounder if you could ramp the contrast down and up and see if it has an effect. Also can you hear any faint arcing or crackling when the projector is running. A crackle at start up is normal but it should not continue past start up.

There is definitely No crackling of any sort, and ramping the contrast up and down does not have any effect on the focus, it blooms a bit at full contrast, but that is to be expected, as illustrated in the photos focus around the 50 mark is totally impossible, as I mentioned earlier I was informed that this unit did suffer some case damage in transit, and I would suspect that it has "rattled" a few other things along the way,
I also mentioned that the astig rings were no locked off and were just floating so I do not know how Curt set it up in the first place, this is now a very "suck it and see situation" I am wondering what Curt might make of it.the pictures currently are watchable, but I am sure that if the focus problem an be rationalized the the focus along with the astig adjustment will make for very nice pictures, but at the moment I fancy that the electronics are being a little overstretched

The blooming is something you dont see on an NEC, it just doesnt happen. I was very suprised to see it when i moved to a Cine 9. An NEC XG will absolutely blow away a Cine 8 in every respect, and theyre very cheap in Australia. That is why i am f***ed if i know why the previous owner of your set was asking an absolutely rediculous price of well over $1,000 AUD, when in reality an XG can be had for a couple hundred bucks.

Curt will not have left the astig rings floating, you can point your finger straight to the previous owner for that. Unless you saw it working flawlessly with your own eyes prior to buying it, id have to wonder if it ever did and if that was the reason he sold it and never ever used it in the first place.

Can you see what the exact part number of the tubes is that are fitted?

You have come this far there is not much more that could be the problem. Why don't we try eliminating the tubes as a problem by swaping one out and putting it into your other Barco projector assuming that projector works or can be made to work.

On the other hand if the other projector does work why not move all the better parts to that projector.

thanks for the reply, there could be something in what you say about this projector, as I was reading your post BINGO! this thing shut itself down, opened it up, fired it up and had a look, the RED scan fail light on the G2 diagnostic board is, all the other green are winking away for maybe about 10-15 seconds, then all shut down, quite honestly as much as I want this to work I am almost over it!, apart from the mysterious focus issues, I now have this, is it feasible to swap the horizontal / vertical board from the BG 808, or is that not a good move
Would really appreciate some serious input here, I have gone as far as I can go using all the suggestions to date, and have enjoyed the journey, but now I think I am in uncharted water here.
I must confess that the idea of an XG is sounding attractive........but the reality is this is what I have and somehow have to try to resolve the issues.
Hope your Christmas day has been better than mine! this problem is a present I could well do without!

Yes the boards will swap although I will ask you for the board part numbers just to be sure. Before swaping anything though you need to get the 2nd projector working as it is from Barco. When that works you can swap parts otherwise you could be swaping bad boards and we will never get to the bottom of this issue.

XGs are a great projector but you would be buying another used projector and you would have no spares. There is no guarantee that another brand of used projector will give you better results. It looks as though you have bought some real issues with this set but you do have another and thats the ticket that you need. Keep moving we will get a resolution.
