Well, I tried to grab a 9500 as that is the only model I haven't owned. Unfortunately, a recycler or whatever was desperate to grab all of the late model 9500s today off of the gov. I have to laugh, because I can't imagine that he can put them up on ebay and make much money. Oh well.

In case some of you were wondering why I started the blend thread, it was to buy a couple of these 9500s and see if I could make a blend work in my space. It is really the only way I can see staying with CRT. Now, I might be short timing it with the G90 till I can get a good price on a JVC.

Nope, not me. Do you really think I have time for buying obsolete, old and nonworking big carcasses of metal?

Seriously, I have 15 or so late model Ultras here, I don't need any more.

In digital projector terms that's about 10 to 12 digitals to one CRT PJ, making those ultras take up more space than all my digital PJs combined Mr. Green

And you do this all out of your house? Razz

I think it would come down to price and location. I'd assume Spanky was hoping the GL 9500's were available significantly cheaper than for what it would cost to locate and obtain a good-condition G90 as a mate for the one Spanky already has. He could then sell the G90 and use the cash to buy whatever hardware he needed for blending. Buying a second G90 plus blending hardware (even if a PC) would start adding expense.

I PMed Curt before the auction, so we didn't compete against each other. As he said, he has more than enough.

Nash,
Most went for mid $200s. The guy who bought all of them obviously would have went higher as he bid me to $400. That is were I tapped out. With shipping, I would be getting close to $1500 and that is over my CRT budget for unknown pjs. It will be interesting what the buyer does with these pjs, as you can get a fully worked over good tube 9500 from Curt for a great price. Maybe it was my old buddy Niktec. Wink

On buying another G90, I did buy another last year for $1k and it had a bad YA board. It did have good tubes though.

Crabb has pretty much nailed my thought process, which isn't a surprise as we have talked about this quite a bit. If I could get to matching late model 9500s, then I would try blending to see if I could make CRT work in my situation. I realize I have been fickle about CRT/digital, but I still love CRT (and the hobby). I would like to have one last farewell before moving over to digital. Right now, a floor mounted G90 gives me a huge 60" wide screen. Rolling Eyes I am not putting the thing on the ceiling period. I was hoping that an inexpensive blend could give me at least an 80" wide screen. I guess this is put on hold for the time being.

I should also add that my CRT budget is limited. I should stress CRT. I am not willing to spend more on a CRT set up than the price of a JVC 4910. That is around $4k or $3k if you can find a b-stock. If JVC had came out with new models this year, then we probably would not even be talking in this thread. The 4910s would probably have dropped into the mid $2ks or less and I would have no problem spending around $2k on this projector. Outside of Analogrocks if there were no more CRTS, then no one here would think twice about owning a 4910.

Once the whole laser/led transfer takes place, then I will be more comfortable going digital. It looks like this could happen in the next year or two.

The numbers don't add up.. A pair of 9500's for what $400? Tubes, hardware, MP mods, and whatever else they need vs one G90?? $500 to 700.00 Fact.. I have bought 3 G90's in the last 2.5 years... You also need to remember that he needs to recoup his cash from the existing G90.. $500 to 1000??

One more thing regarding the gov pjs. Anyone thinking they are getting a great deal has to remember it is a crap shoot. I have bought some good stuff off of the gov and I have gotten some absolute crap. Without inspection, one doesn't know what you are in for.

So far my best win was three Monovision 36" CRT tube TVs for $50. This was in '05. I made $100 off of them, but more importantly smoothed over some ill will between an old business acquaintance.

I am not sure I understand your numbers. One 9500 was going to be at least $700 after delivery.

Spanky, If I understand it right, you're limited by the floor space so you only can get 60" wide picture, and instead of putting it up, you'd tolerate two projectors on the floor just to get 80" wide?

I projecting 63" wide from floor as well, but planning to go up to the ceiling to reach 80" wide with the XG.

Just an FYI... last time Curt and I bought these, the tubes were worn with some kind of trapezoidal pattern. Curt's were all bad. I had some good tubes, but it really is shear luck!

Position yourself knowing that you WILL be re-tubing these. They are NOT usable as-is. Unless you go down and stare into the lenses with a light to make sure you know what you're getting, you have only a 5% chance of getting something that is good to use... They are late model and they work, but they have 20-30K hours on them and I'm not exaggerating. There is one on ebay now.

Shipping just ONE of these using Fast Track from OK to NY cost me $800!

If you want a good projector, do the legwork or just get one from Curt. It'll be right, or he'll fix it, versus being left with a heavy, expensive door-stop...

(And no, I'm not affiliated with anything... I wanted a pair of late model 9500LC Ultras, and I had the tubes for them... from Curt... BIG BUCKS, but NOS...)

Oh, and mine were basically all scratched up, dented, and a little crushed from being stacked, and I don't mean in a cool way... Wink I did notice that this set was not stacked... but if you looked a bit closer, they were damaged from being stacked at some point...

And, they have a plate with handles on it which means (I assume) they've been mounted and used in an L3 simulator, so... trapezoids! Blah...

I would be willing to do a floor set up for a year or so, but no way am I putting a CRT on the ceiling. This is a living room not a dedicated HT.

I figure I could build a coffee table set up if I did some sort of blend.

It looks like this will probably not happen. I may do what Justin has in his avatar pic, which is put chairs on either side of the pj. It is not ideal, but I could live with that. In that scenario, I would hope that JVC comes out with new pjs at CES. If so, then a 4910 might be something worth pursuing.

To be totally honest, if JVC still had some b-stock RS-46s for mid $1ks, then I would probably pull the trigger on one of those.

Also keep in mind that I bought a similar 10 2008 vintage 9500 Ultras for pennies out of Wa state 5 months ago. Cost me little to ship since they were only 1 state away. All tubes with pentagon shape wear patterns, all with HD10L lenses. Totally useless sets, so I parted them out. Still have 5 complete ones here, but chances are I won't retube them.

You'd rather need a dining table to cover two 9500s Smile I'm not even sure you can set up two 9" machines for BLEND on a 80" wide screen not even with HD10L lenses. I wasn't able to adjust the tube-toe in right for 60" with plain HD10 lenses on a M9000.
I am doing floor projection for 3 years now, and the small footprint is one of the reasons why I'm sticked with the NECs.

Sitting dead center is ideal but i don't feel like i lose much sitting to the side. I have changed screens, and modded the hell out of the pj. If it were on the ceiling it would have been a total nightmare. I also run with minimal keystone and that would be much harder on the ceiling. If i build my next theater from scratch i might consider putting on the ceiling but never in an existing space.

gjaky,
I was going to make a coffee table to put over them.

Justin,
I did a floor mount years ago and it is nice for ease of set up. I didn't particularly care to sit off to the side, but I got used to it. Interestingly, my first CRT pj I set up projecting on my left wall of a front facing couch. I sat or laid down on the other side of the couch and it wasn't to bad. With my two Roche chairs, I may just go that route. They are mighty comfortable.Wink
