True. One more question. I have new VDC tubes build 2011. Are these rebuild tubes or real new? I mean did VDC harden the phosphor? I am letting them burn some hours at contrast 40 and defocus but if they are rebuild I should do that more carefully I guess.

Personally, I can't wait to pass the CRT Bar exam so that I can enjoy a movie once in a while too. I keep putting it off because I don't want to waste a good movie moment on a bad set up. I watch maybe one a week, sometimes more, but plenty of TV-shows. As a matter of fact, I can't wait for the first episode of Better Call Saul and hope it will be as good as its predecessor.

I was looking at the moon and thought he that one is not so round, it even seems to flare how to adjust

I have had two times that the G2 connector came loose from a neckboard. I think that happened after I tightened those connectors a bit. But now again during testing the red suddenly died and even after resoldering and measuring there was no g2.
Now it seems the connection on the print to the resistance close was lose. I had to solder a wire around the connector to the resistor. But still this simple problem is difficult to fix. There are two printwires on top and on bottom of the connector. I think one has to be careful here because there is 1000V?
I also struggled with why the green could be moved more to the left than to the right with the focus yoke. Turns out there was some glue inside the yoke.
So making progress slowly....

For a set with as little electronic adjustment needed you should always go into green convergence and zero it out. Then use the
flare rings on the CPC magnets and the focus yoke to center the green grid. This is a pain and even I have not done this yet on my set up . I just did the flare on my Green right PJ and I still think I can get better. However it moved the Green grid over about 1 1/2 inches. So adjusting the yoke is next. But once you move the yoke to center the flare has to be re adjusted. Then it moves the Green grid, sop back to the focus yoke, but now the flare is off again so back to the flare magnets, then back to focus yoke Argggg!!!!!!!
You get the idea
This is why i just deal with what i have now. I dont have 2 weeks to set up two PJ's perfectly!! lol But some day I will get there little by little. I spent two hours last night on the flare and astig. I hate the new rings with only tabs, the ones with the twist
knobs are so much better but take up more space .

Yes I am glad I got a set of old rings from Curt. Even those have to be cleaned from paint else the knob slips.
I am fiddling with the magnets with the lenses off. Looking at the phosphor and with one hand twisting the magnets. I find it fun but it is more to get a good start this way. The mids of the lines and dots and the shapes are very clear. For judging the movement I would need one color steady on the screen but I check that later with the lenses on.
Now I have to adjust the angle of convergence and deflection coil because they too are off.

Again here be sure to null the convergence in the Green service menu by pressing "0". or do a initialization first.
Move the deflection coil first to level the grids. The convergence coil should lock into a slot on the DF coil.
You know if the Conv coil is not aligned properly when you try to converge the horizontal lines and the vertical's might move in that zone as well. If they do also move then you have to slightly adjust the Conv coil. I have only seen this once and it was obvious the slots of the two coils were not aligned .
Having a properly mechanically aligned and focused PJ will make it easy to properly resolve 1080p@60 with no mods at all.

Ok. I check for that slot. I noticed that the convergence yoke moved a little over the deflection yoke. Thanks!

Ok I admit it I am crazy. Because I am thinking about not getting the plastic/lead shield in the Marquee again and I would even like to rebuild the plastic tube covers with a kind of light wood.
I am also working with tube amplifiers and they sound better with all wood and tubes and gold plated wiring.

I would keep the plastic and just line them with EMI/RFI absorbing material. But that stuff is expensive.
Do a search at Farnel or Mouser for RFI or EMI shielding.
After doing the green CPC magnets that took me a few hours over two days the dots are nice and round. But the grid moves as I focus and defocus. Too much fiddling to get that perfect as I did not want to adjust the focus coil too. But I have to say even the sides and edges are pretty round with no astig coil connected yet. Still have to attempt scheimfluge as well.

Yeah I am wondering about that. I don't think there is much radiation coming from the tubes. I remember that a dentist laid some x-ray material below the tubes and after a year there was almost no picture burned in the photo. The Barco only have a metal shield I think that should be enough. I think the material has to breath a little also better for temperature hotspots and the like.

Not radiation or noise from the tubes but RFI/EMI into the tubes. The FGM and mostly the HDM produce lots of airborne RFI/EMI noise. Just putting an oscilloscope probe with in a couple inches to the HDM wires and HDM itself will pick up wave forms. That most definitely may get into the tube through the tube itself the focus coils and wires, deflection coils etc. I think using absorbing EMI/RFI materials would work better than shielding materials. Shields just would deflect the unwanted RFI/EMI to another.
Now this is just my theory and we won't know till we try to use those materials in certain locations in the chassis.
Lining the HDM enclosure with it and using EMI/RFI absorbing wire wraps around the HDM wires would be where I would want to start.

HE that is a good point. Absorbing materials. Or extra shielding on the horizontal wires?
